Did you know Marrakech is home to one of the world’s oldest universities? The Ben Youssef Madrasa was founded in the 14th century and expanded in the 16th century, and was at one point the largest in North Africa, accommodating up to 900 students. I had a great time speaking at our exclusive Tech Talk Breakfast in Marrakech on the first day of #GITEXAfrica last week. Alongside Umar Bagus and Anass Bensrhir, I shared insights from our soon-to-be-released technology trends report, with a specific focus on those most relevant to Africa today. Of course, as with everywhere else, AI is having a huge impact here. But there are other trends worth spotlighting too, particularly the cloud, which received $54bn in investment last year according to our research. I recently co-authored an article outlining the opportunity presented by the cloud - which I’ve linked in the comments - showing that the technology could add $797bn to the African economy. Given the energy in the room I have no doubt the region will unlock this value. It was GITEX’s second event in Africa, and my first visit to Marrakech - I’ll be sure to be back to explore the city’s stunning infrastructure and souks soon! And having spoken to leaders at our event, and at the financial services meetings I attended on Tuesday, I was struck by the enthusiasm from both the country’s and region’s leaders for technology.
