🛑 ❗ Leaving technical names in your dashboard smacks of inconsideration for your audience. 👀 I’ve seen both inexperienced and more seasoned dashboard developers guilty of this underscore-toting offence and it makes me cringe every time! 😬 You can’t expect your business users to correctly guess what each graph is showing from alphanumeric-and-underscore soup. 🍜 Even for fairly straightforward terms like sales_num - the mature dashboard designer will ensure it is changed it to a properly capitalized and spaced business name label ---- before it ever rests on business users' eyes! 👩💼 👨💼 Check out my article for more info 👇

Dashboard Dilemmas: Navigating the Data Deluge with a Smile As I delved deep into the world of data dashboards, I stumbled upon some fascinating insights that I just had to share. In this era of information overload, it's not about how much data you have, but how smartly you can wield it. After hours of research and a few too many cups of coffee, here's what I've uncovered about the state of data dashboards: • Data abundance is real, but insight scarcity is the true challenge • Customisable dashboards are the secret sauce for unlocking data's potential • Tools like Grafana, Semrush, and Looker Studio are leading the charge • The right dashboard can turn data into a decision-making superpower Now, let's talk about Grafana, the Swiss Army knife of data visualisation. This open-source wonder is like a playground for data enthusiasts. Here's what makes it stand out: • No strings attached: Free test environment with no time limits or sign-up hassles • Widget wizardry: Highly customisable widgets that expand to full-screen • Visual variety: A smorgasbord of visualisation options with smart suggestions • Data democracy: Import from various databases for seamless migration • Keyboard shortcuts galore: Because who doesn't love a good shortcut? But it's not all rainbows and bar charts. Grafana has its quirks: • Too much freedom can lead to layout chaos • Navigation icons that play hide and seek with their meanings • Mobile experience that's more "meh" than marvellous In conclusion, the data dashboard landscape is evolving faster than you can say "pivot table." As organisations grapple with the data deluge, tools like Grafana are paving the way for more intuitive, flexible, and powerful data visualisation. Remember, in the world of data, it's not about having all the answers – it's about asking the right questions. So, go forth and visualise, my friends! Your data story is waiting to be told. #UXResearch #Productdesign #passion

💡 Looker tip! Keep. It. Simple. Obviously the K.I.S.S. principle applies to plenty of tools beyond Looker and outside of the glamorous world of data & BI, but my point is that you need to play to its strengths. You might be surprised at how something that's simple to you, like a pivoted year-over-year chart, can be really useful and impressive to your end users or clients! Looker has plenty of weaknesses especially when it comes to visualisation, but there are also many relatively easy things you can do to add some 'flair'. Drill fields are a good example - they provide a very easy way to add interactivity and build a user journey through your reports. Similarly, custom links - remember Looker is largely URL based so you can link out to almost anything in Looker or a modify the default drill links to e.g. add pivots. Field HTML can be fiddly but with a little tweaking you add some formatting, colour, or tooltips to enhance the UI you present to your users. Understanding and using the built-in visualisation options to tune your charts helps to make your dashboards look and feel as good as possible. Making use of dashboard features like text/markdown tiles, buttons and faceting filters (setting them to update based on the values selected for other filters) can also go a long way. Taking care over what fields are exposed in your Explores as well as careful labelling and useful descriptions will help your Explorers get what they need without too much confusion. Enabling features like Google Sheets integration or other Looker actions will make the most of Looker as a data platform within your orgnanisation. What are your 'quick wins' for making the most of Looker? Let me know!

💡 Looker tip! Some facts about filtering 👇 🤯 Dashboard filters will *override* filters in the queries of the dashboard's tile - but only if they are set to update that field. This is a common source of confusion, especially if you have e.g. a UTC and a local date fields, or if the tile uses e.g. a week timeframe and the dashboard filter uses the date timeframe from a dimension group (note that dimension groups actually create multiple dimensions). You can also use this fact for some neat tricks. The filters in the tile's original query will remain as you'll see if you edit the tile from the dashboard edit mode - again this can be confusing, or useful if used correctly. 🔑 Looker has its own filter expression syntax! This can be used in the `filters:` parameter for measures, as well as the matches_filter() function in custom fields/custom filter expressions, and user attributes of the String Filter type (these are used for access filters). You can even use filter expressions directly in a filter by choosing the 'Matches (advanced)' filter type in the filter options. This last one is really handy if you quickly want to get the filter expression for a filter configured in the UI - just switch to Matches (advanced) to see the expression! 🔢 Filters for fields with type: number *will not show suggestions*. This is something I hadn't come across until someone asked me about it recently, and it makes sense - number fields could have many many options so suggestions might not make sense. If you have a number field with a limited number of values (robot type IDs in this case 🤖 ) you can either manually add the options in a dashboard's filter settings, or convert the field to be a string type. Remember to cast the underlying value to a string in the sql though and be aware of the implications of this... #looker #lookertips
