Happy Friday everyone!
Did you attend DIA Europe last week in Brussels? If so, you may have seen our G&L seed pencils. We are excited to see everyone’s gardens in the Summer! We had a couple of new options including Cherry Tomatoes, Sage, Sunflowers and Carnations. Are you looking for some new additions to your garden? We’re open to suggestions!
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend. As always, if you’re interested in learning more about our regulatory affairs or quality assurance services, please drop me a note.

The 2024 Nonthermal Workshop in Potsdam is just around the corner, and we are all looking forward for a great event in Germany!
🔔 BTW, if you haven’t registered yet, now is the time! 🔔 Early bird ends on 22/09/24
(https://lnkd.in/dYc3M73R)
But we are already working on the next workshop – the 2025 Nonthermal Workshop.
Would you like to host it? Key details are below, and more details are in the attached file.
The Nonthermal Processing Division of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT-NPD) and the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) invite groups from North America or other countries outside of Europe to organize and host the 2024 EFFoST / IFT-NPD workshop and short course.
This annual, high-profile event serves as an excellent forum for scientists from academia, the food industry, equipment providers, and regulatory agencies worldwide to discuss scientific advancements in nonthermal processing technologies and identify opportunities for industrial implementation. IFT-NPD and EFFoST have organized these joint annual workshops over the last two decades.
The joint IFT-EFFoST workshop committee will evaluate the proposals. The committee will consider highly meritorious proposals from other parts of the world as the overall quality of the proposal will prevail over location.
October 10: Key deadline for informal expressions of interest to IFT-NPD / EFFoST workshop committee. A brief letter of intent should be submitted to the IFT-NPD / EFFoST Joint Workshop Committee. Please contact Indrawati Oey (indrawati.oey@otago.ac.nz) and/or Oliver Schlüter (oschlueter@atb-potsdam.de). The interested groups will be provided with detailed instructions for full proposal preparation. Additional details in the attached file.
⚖🥩🫛 The CJEU recently issued its judgment regarding the French decree that aimed to restrict the use of meat-related terms for plant-based products.
The court ruled that since France has not yet defined legal names for terms traditionally linked to animal-based foods, it cannot prevent plant-based product manufacturers from using those terms.
This case, initially brought by organizations such as the European Vegetarian Union, Association Protéines France, and the U.S. company Beyond Meat, will now be referred back to the French Council of State (Conseil d’Etat) for a final ruling.
While the ruling offers Member States a pathway to establish legal names, it also serves as a clear warning: bans on specific terms cannot be arbitrarily imposed without proper legal justification.
This decision raises important questions: Will this lead to harmonization challenges across the EU? And are consumers able to clearly differentiate between plant-based and animal-based products?

In case you missed it, partners Claudia Lewis and Shahin Rothermel hosted a fireside chat at IFT First on “Navigating the Legal Landscape of Food and Innovation.” Their discussion touched on the introduction of new ingredients and technologies, marketing risks and strategies, the concept of food as medicine, the impact of artificial intelligence, and the latest legal updates from the FDA, the FTC, and the class action bar.
What we heard the most: We fielded several questions from various companies regarding FDA regulations, product claims and ingredient innovation.
• Can we compare our innovative sweeteners to sugar or other sugar substitutes? Are there specific disclaimers or statements we must include in our marketing materials? Can we use terms like “all natural,” “low-calorie,” or zero-calorie”?
• We have a novel food ingredient, how do we obtain food additive or GRAS status, what is the process and when should we engage with FDA?
• What evidence do we need to substantiate our product’s claims to meet FDA and FTC requirements?
• My competitors are making claims and we have been told we cannot. How do we stay competitive?

I am excited to share the publication of our latest article "Current Insights into Industrial Trans Fatty Acids Legal Frameworks and Health Challenges in the European Union and Spain" in the prestigious journal Foods. This work comprehensively analyzes the regulatory frameworks for industrial trans fatty acids in the EU and Spain, identifying key challenges in their implementation and monitoring. Our findings reveal important regulatory gaps and the need for more robust control systems.
I am deeply grateful to my co-authors for their invaluable contribution: Pablo J. Miró Colmenárez; Esther Illán-Marcos; María Méndez Rocasolano; José Manuel Martínez-Hernandez; Ezequiel Zamora-Ledezma; and Camilo Zamora-Ledezma BSc. PhD. Prof.
Special thanks for the fruitful collaboration between institutions: Universidad Técnica de Manabí; Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio; UCAM Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia. This inter-institutional collaboration demonstrates the power of joint work in scientific research to address global challenges in food safety and public health.
