Looking for a safe space, following a hectic #ClimateWeekNYC? Join me this time next week (09-Oct @ 2pm UTC) as I speak with the wonderful Alison Taylor about her book "𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅: 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝑩𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒏 𝑫𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝑻𝒖𝒓𝒃𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅" When I finished this book a couple of months back, I had to get in touch with Alison. As someone relatively new to Corporate Governance, I've been amazed by how much content and guidance is available, and how many frameworks and courses there are on this topic. I was equally surprised at how little impact it's making... This is perhaps why I enjoyed Alison's book so much. Rather than offering abstract, theoretical ideas, Alison emphasises how Governance challenges manifest in real-world corporate settings, and how they can be - and have been (with examples...) overcome. What sets her work apart is her deep focus on the intersection between business ethics and organisational culture. Alison draws on her extensive experience in consulting and working with a broad range of organisations, including Government, to provide recommendations grounded in practical, palatable guidance. Additionally, her approach is more forward-looking, addressing emerging issues such as anti-ESG pressures, and the importance of transparency in leadership. This makes her work highly relevant to both current challenges and future shifts in business ethics. Her ability to weave these topics into easily digestible strategies makes her book stand out, and I'm excited to hear her thoughts on what we can do as an Academy, but also a society, to effect positive sustainable changes. In today's fast-paced, competitive environment, we often hear the phrase "business is business." But does that mean ethics have to take a back seat? The truth is, business decisions and ethical principles *should* align—but too often, they don't. The drive for profitability, market share, and growth can overshadow what’s morally right, and we see this play out in shortcuts, exploitation, and unsustainable practices. It creates a perception that ethical business is an oxymoron. Yet, we’ve also seen how companies built on strong ethical foundations—those that value integrity, transparency, and social responsibility—are often the ones with loyal customers and long-term success. It's not always the easy path, but it's the right one. So, the real challenge lies in integrating ethical values into the heart of business, not as a PR tool, but as a core driver of every decision. 📈💡 *Is it time for businesses to stop seeing ethics as optional and start seeing them as essential?* #BusinessEthics #Leadership #Integrity #SustainableBusiness #CorporateResponsibility

"Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do." — Potter Stewart In today's fast-paced business world, the lines between legality and morality can sometimes blur. Just because something is legally permissible doesn't always mean it's the right thing to do. Potter Stewart's quote highlights the importance of understanding this distinction. Ethics in business goes beyond merely following laws or regulations; it’s about maintaining integrity and doing what is morally sound, even when no one is watching. Ethical decision-making builds trust with customers, partners, and employees. It creates a foundation of credibility that can lead to long-term success. In practice, this means thinking critically about your actions and their potential impact, not just on your business but on society as a whole. For example, you may have the right to cut corners to save costs, but the ethical decision might be to prioritise quality and fairness, ensuring that all stakeholders benefit. Ultimately, businesses that prioritise ethics will foster loyalty, enhance their reputation, and contribute to a positive legacy. In the end, doing the right thing often proves to be the smartest strategy.
