This is why executive search is broken. Just like sales. With a little wee bit of research, this person would've quickly realized I founded and run my own executive search company focused on Sales and CS roles for startups. Spray and pray pitching doesn't work, folks. The faster we understand this, the better our results will be. Thanks to this person for reminding me why Taryn Lanaghan and I do what we do here at ATP. Co-Founder & CEO - HealthTech / Marketplace I'm helping two incredibly accomplished entrepreneurs find a CEO & Co-Founder for a venture they've been researching for the past few months. The problem space is clear - they're now looking for a driven & entrepreneurial person to execute on the idea while being mentored & funded by two of the most impressive people I've ever met (my description!). This is different to most other founding journeys - you will run the business, be able to draw a reasonable salary from day 1 and will own a majority stake in the business. They want someone who does well in this role to have significant upside. Great startup mindsets and founders know: 1. It is about the startup, not titles, job descriptions, and work-life balance. It is about the startup. 2. Everyone in your startup is in sales, especially in the early days. 3. Your clients are your most significant and most influential investors. 4. Your Co-founder, if needed, is one of the most critical hires you will ever make. 5. Your next five hires will be the second most critical hires you make. 6. If you are technical, hire someone excellent in sales. If you are great at sales, hire someone technical. You are both still in sales. 7. 0 to 1 and 1-10 are crucial. 8. How do you deal with key man (or woman) risk in an enterprise? I recently acquired a small business and had to deal with this because the founder was extremely talented and could do lots of things well. A person like this is said to be a 'unicorn'. The solution is to chop off the horn, find a rhino and find a horse 🙂 In other words, create multiple narrower job descriptions.
