ICYMI, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness covered how much of our news consumption these days comes from social media and cable news, but whatever happened to local newspapers? Along with Journalist, author, and educator Meg Heckan, they discussed the history of newspapers, how communities are impacted when their local paper folds, what we can do to cultivate a stronger news ecosystem that’s more reflective of our society, and how this all impacts democracy. It's a good listen! https://lnkd.in/e9r5YrFZ

Did you know that the start of August marks what's affectionately called in journalism - the silly season? It's called that because journalists often find themselves looking for more stories. Parliament is in recess so there's less topical news around. Guess what? This is great news for you as a business owner as you have even more chance to secure some top tier national coverage. But if you're stuck on how to get started with doing that - I have you covered. On Wednesday 7th August at 8pm BST, I'm going to be holding a FREE hour-long masterclass about what foundations you need to have in place to get started with PR. It's like anything, if you don't know what you need - you'll either cobble it together in the wrong way, skip out an important step, or not get started at all. I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest paper, a collaborative effort that sheds light on the complexities of digital ecosystems, particularly within the realm of Github. I am immensely grateful to my co-authors and the dedicated reviewers, with special thanks to Tomás and Valeria. This paper delves into the nuances of overcoming boundaries in the digital space, highlighting the ways in which discipline and geographical barriers can be transcended through platforms like Github. It is a testament to the power of global collaboration, showcasing how journalists from diverse backgrounds can come together to leverage the resources of larger newsrooms and share valuable insights through code sharing. However, our research also underscores the existence of asymmetry in the digital landscape, where certain areas have access to greater resources and subsequently foster a higher volume of projects. This raises important questions about diversity and inclusion within digital spaces, prompting us to critically examine the disparities that persist despite technological advancements. Let us continue to explore and address the complexities of digital ecosystems, working towards a more equitable and diverse future. I am truly honored to have been a part of this insightful endeavor, and I look forward to the meaningful discussions and progress it will inspire. #DigitalEcosystems #DiversityInTech #CollaborativeResearch

Thanks for the shout-out. And this makes a strong case to support community-driven journalism! (docu.nyc/donate) "Flaming Hydra, 404 Media, Aftermath, and Hell Gate are worker-owned cooperatives, and so is Defector, which celebrated its third birthday last fall. Other journalist-run publications are nonprofits, like Documented, the Colorado Sun, and Block Club Chicago. Some of these projects rebuilt over the foundations of badly managed or shuttered publications, and others started from scratch; some have achieved profitability, and others are just starting to build it. What they have in common is that the primary goal is doing real journalism. These publishers want to find and keep intelligent, engaged readers—and that means that serving those readers well, and sustainably, comes before maximizing profits." Upholding democracy relies on informed communities. This is why investing in journalism is so important! You can always lean on local, nonprofit news sources for more accurate and relevant information, and they also tend to be easier to reach if you have questions about the stories they are publishing. Be aware of misinformation and disinformation, and do your part not to spread it.
