It was an honour to host the visit of Dr. Hiqmet Demiri, Seed Expert, World Bank. We have discussed the current status, issues and challenges of the Seed sector in Assam, India with all the stakeholders. Paddy seed plays a major role in Assam. Assam is having huge potential for seed production and seed sale. In recent years seed replacement rate has increased and Farmer Producer Companies have come forward for Seed Production. The objective of the meeting was to enhance the seed supply chain, improve quality of seed, address the current challenges, enhance support to FPCs and review the policy for better support. Ravi, a makhana farmer from Bihar, used to sell his produce for only ₹800 per kg to local traders, while the same makhana was sold for ₹1,400-2,000 per kg in urban markets, depending on the quality. This price gap, caused by middlemen and fragmented supply chains, left Ravi with minimal profits despite the growing demand for his produce. The Problem:
Farmers like Ravi face difficulties accessing larger markets and receiving fair prices. As a result, their earnings remain low, even when consumers pay premium rates in cities. How Bargee Farms Solved It:
Bargee Farms connected Ravi directly to buyers in urban areas, where demand for premium makhana is high. Through our streamlined supply chain, Ravi now sells his produce for ₹1,200-1,600 per kg, depending on quality—significantly boosting his income. Results:
Ravi’s earnings have increased by up to 50%, allowing him to improve his farming practices and reinvest in his business. In rural India, farmers have had long struggles with unfair pricing and delayed payments due to their dependence on local mandis and middlemen. We at Arya.ag addressed this challenge by building a transformative partnership with Navi Umed FPC and Suguna Foods in Maharashtra. Our intervention enabled direct produce collection from farms, on-site quality assessment, and immediate payments—effectively eliminating intermediaries and their associated costs. The transformation has been remarkable: over 3,500 farmers now enjoy reduced transport costs and prompt payments, while Navi Umed FPC has significantly expanded its reach. This success story shows our commitment towards transforming agricultural commerce. Millets making a comeback in Odisha! 🇮🇳 Odisha's innovative Millet Mission is bringing these nutritious grains back to farms and plates. How? -Supporting farmers with good practices & minimum support price. -Promoting millet consumption in urban & rural areas. -Encouraging local processing & entrepreneurship. Success Story: -Launched in 2017, the program has expanded 30 blocks across seven districts, the initiative roped in self-help groups, and non-governmental organisations like Revitalising Rainfed Agriculture Network, WASSAN India, and many more. -Increased millet production & farmer income. -Promoted a healthy millet food culture. Looking ahead: -Odisha is investing heavily to make millets a major crop, boosting farmer livelihoods and healthy eating! “The Mission is supported by a multilevel, hybrid programme management unit (comprising research Institutions, policy advocacy networks, non-government and government organisations) embedded in an inter-departmental government machinery.
