Did you ever think about how music and literature are intrinsically linked? How songs are poetry and lyricists are poets? Well, I did. So, I wrote a paper on this where I analyzed the song "The Lakes" by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, which I see as a manifestation of Romanticism and Taylor as a Romantic poet. Here is the abstract of the paper: In the 21st century, poetry has manifested in unprecedented ways, often intersecting with popular music. This paper analyzes "The Lakes" by Taylor Swift from her album Folklore, paying tribute to 19th-century Romantic poets like William Wordsworth and John Keats. The song serves as a contemporary resurgence of Romanticism, exemplified by the chorus: “Take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die; I don't belong.” Key themes include: Escapism and Isolation: Written during quarantine in July 2020, Swift's lyrics reflect a desire to escape into nature and find solace amid chaos. Nature Imagery: Vivid depictions of the Lake District evoke the themes of melancholia and appreciation for rustic life. Connection to Romanticism: The song aligns with Romantic ideals, emphasizing peace found in solitude.
