I was 30 before I started freelancing as an editor/motion designer. Prior to that I was the sales and marketing director for a software company that digitally archived people's teeth. A merger eliminated my position due to redundancy so I negotiated a part-time demotion to focus more on freelance. Soon I found myself calling in one, sometimes two, sometimes three weeks in a row due to bookings. Obviously the arrangement was not tenable. It was my day off. They called to ask if I could come in but my car was in the shop. They sent a driver to shuttle me in. Immediately upon entering, someone guided me to a meeting room. There must have been 15 people sitting at a big roundtable. I remember thinking, 'I'm getting laid off just like in the movies.' I negotiated a severance and they drove me home. When I think back on it, I learned to freelance how I learned to swim. Slowly. Water touching my feet, 'that's okay. Maybe I'll go up to my knees.' Next thing you know you're up to your neck. Anything further is actual swimming and 'I'm not sure I'm there yet oh shit someone just threw me in the deep end I guess I'll swim now.' Not everyone gets to ease in to freelance like I was able to. And they're probably better for it. So, as a little motivation boost and to stop me from procrastinating, I have decided to come up with a little weekly goals list and to start doing this every week. ⭐️My first goal is to secure at least another freelance job. I’m going to reach out to DJ’s and creators I have already worked with, as well as ones I haven’t worked with and see if they have any opportunities for me, paid or unpaid. I feel it is very important as a freelance videographer when you’re starting out to offer your services for free to first time clients, to prove what you can do. ⭐️My second goal is to work on an edit for a content creator and musician which has literally taken me forever to complete. Not only does my laptop hate how big the files are, there is 8 hours of footage, 2 microphone channel and it needs to be between 15 and 20 minutes... I am going to try and get at least 5 minutes more of the video edited this week. ⭐️My last goal for this week is to start making sure I am consistently posting on my social media platforms, and LinkedIn! I have been struggling to find work, and from seeing what other videographers do, I need to build my own brand more and ensure my name is getting around. For production, half and full day is still the standard, however, for post production things are very circumstantial. What else would you look for? For pretty much all my working life, all I've ever known is being behind a camera. I bought my first filming camera (a Sony Z5) when I was about 20. This enabled me to get some small corporate jobs in and around York where I was studying Film & TV production at university. I've been freelance since before I left uni. It's all I've ever known. I moved to London at 25 and tried to get a foot in the door in the film & TV industry, but it wasn't until I was 27 that I got a break and worked consistently with a jib operator as his technician. I had good work for several years. At 30 I started pursuing outdoor and adventure photography and film making with the ambition of diversifying into the adventure sector for TV and stills, as this is an area I really enjoy and passionate about. It didn't take long to get my first images published in a magazine. 34, and I began to move away from jib assisting into jib and camera operating. But as with any freelancer stepping up, it's never easy at first. Now at 37, as I see the TV industry slowed and many colleagues struggling to find work, I find myself now like I'm sure others are, questioning how I can diversify and gain skills in other areas to make myself potentially more employable in my areas of specialism. So if you're someone who works in marketing, or a camera supervisor/DoP, or another position whereby you can hire freelancers, what skills outside of the remit you generally you look for (other than work ethic, recommendations, style of shooting for instance that would fulfil your brief) would help you consider a person to be hired? I love what I do, and the people that I work with. It makes the job fun and exciting and the freelance life can be so diverse in terms of the jobs you do get - but I have begun to wonder what else I could do that isn't behind a camera...

A Message for Clients and Agencies Regarding Freelance Payment Practices As a freelancer in the creative industry—photographer, videographer, and editor—I’ve encountered a recurring challenge that I believe needs more attention: delayed payments. While I understand that agencies and clients often make advance payments to secure services, it's not uncommon for freelancers like myself to be left waiting for weeks or even months for compensation after the work is completed. This puts a significant strain on our ability to continue providing quality work and supporting our craft. It's time for a fairer payment structure that values the work and dedication of freelancers from the start. A reasonable advance payment not only ensures freelancers are compensated for their time but also builds trust between both parties. Once the project is delivered, the remaining balance can be settled. Always hard to know what is causing a slump, and ~the economy~ and Q4 is always a contributing factor, but there’s a strong temptation to replace humans with machines RN. I’ve personally lost two jobs to “oh we’ll just use ChatGPT”. Hard not to laugh, because it’s not the same. Believe me, you can tell. And as I said in a creative workshop recently - your clients deserve better. We’re a creative industry! Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. AI has a purpose, but it shouldn’t replace the human experience.
