"To improve the safety of maternity services we must prioritise learning from the experience of bereaved parents." - Robert Wilson, Head of the Sands & Tommy's Joint Policy Unit The latest Care Quality Commission 2024 Maternity Survey reveals troubling gaps in care and communication. As failures to listen and act on women’s worries persist, it’s clear that change is urgently needed to rebuild trust. Read Robert Wilson’s response to the findings in Health Service Journal ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eTExzaHt These findings echo a 2023 Sands survey of bereaved parents that found: ➡️more than a third (34%) did not have confidence in the staff caring for them ➡️almost half (48%) felt more could have been done for them and their baby Tommy's

Can the Family Care Act help improve health outcomes? Studies have shown that family paid leave can lead to improved health outcomes for both parents and children. For instance, new mothers who take paid maternity leave are less likely to suffer from postpartum depression. Will you stand with us? I see certain organisations are pushing the idea that one profession involved in maternity care has better ‘climate credentials’ than others. If we want to make the process of childbirth about environmental impact (I don’t think we should), we need to consider the environmental impact of preventable harm (often as a consequence of lack of timely intervention & poor collaboration within multi-professional teams). In the UK, NHSR estimate the cost of this harm to be £4,000,000,000 a year (yes, that’s the correct number of 0’s). This is money to support dedicated teams or carers working 24/7, multi- hospital visits to care for complex health needs, modifications to people’s homes to include hydra-therapy pools and special adaptions etc…. If someone did a study to calculate the carbon footprint implications associated with this £4 billion / year ‘cost of harm’ - I’m pretty sure it would conclude that the most effective way of reducing the carbon footprint associated with childbirth would be to prioritise a safe outcome - something that can only be achieved with multi-professional maternity teams working together. #maternitysafety

#Maternity #healthcare #data holds immense potential to improve patient safety and outcomes for both mothers and newborns. By collecting, analysing, and leveraging this data, the #NHS will hopefully identify trends, predict complications, and better meet the needs of each #patient. Data-driven insights are surely the key to creating safer, more effective care systems for all mothers and newborns. The recent #CQC inspection has shone a light on areas/Trusts that require improvement, but shouldn’t we also be asking patients about their experiences? Just imagine ….. all that lost data 📈 📉…. #patientsafety #maternitysafety
