The Canadian Armed Forces were not properly equipped to fight the War in Afghanistan until they were already withdrawn from that un-winnable conflict. Today the CAF remains well configured to fight a counter-insurgency against an ill equipped foe. However, there is nothing on the order boks to indicate that the military braintrust is preparing to fight a near-peer conventional war...like the one that has been raging in Ukraine for two and a half years. Update on Dr. Abu Safiya’s Arbitrary Detention and Denial of Access to Legal Counsel, Referred to UN Special Procedures (24/01/2025) Al Mezan Center for Human Rights "expresses profound alarm for Dr. Abu Safiya’s safety and well-being, fearing that he may be subjected to severe torture, retaliation, or other forms of coercion, particularly given the ongoing and deliberate denial of access to a lawyer. In response to these egregious violations of international law, Al Mezan has raised Dr. Abu Safiya’s case with relevant United Nations (UN) Special Procedures, including the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, and the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders. At a minimum, the international community must demand that Israeli authorities provide Dr. Abu Safiya with immediate and unrestricted access to his legal counsel to independently evaluate his conditions, protect his legal rights, and ensure urgent oversight of his treatment while in custody." https://lnkd.in/dYCy7NN6

It can be a difficult process transferring back into civilian life. There are many transferable skills that suit construction and management. However, if none of your skills transfer directly into a role, the core values instilled within you whilst in active service are characteristics that I would look for when recruiting. I have witnessed first hand the benefit and necessity of reservists and there are not enough employers out there that grant additional leave to enable reservists to commit to training and deployment where needed.
