New cash meta-analysis results presented in upcoming International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) event I'm excited to be presenting at this upcoming IFPRI event sharing findings from a large-scale review and meta-analysis of the effects of cash transfers on core household economic outcomes (consumption, income + employment) in low- and middle-income countries. We screened thousands of papers and analyzed hundreds of causal estimates, generating five key findings. 1) Cash transfers of all forms do have a positive effect on income and consumption: about $2 per month per household per (cumulative) $100 transferred. In general, patterns suggest this effect persists around 2.5 - 3 years. 2) Effects are larger (up to two times larger) when cash is supplemented with other livelihoods-oriented cash plus interventions. 3) There is no evidence at all that cash discourages work. The effect is a precisely estimated zero. 4) Under reasonable assumptions, the cash transfers typically observed in most developing country contexts are not large enough to close the gap between a typical poor household and the poverty line. That is not to suggest they don't have positive effects (they do!) But they are (generally) NOT large enough to eliminate poverty. That is not a plausible expectation for the majority of cash transfer programs. We also have some interesting findings suggestive of serious publication bias in this literature - more in another post soon!

Great quote from Dr Saskia Nowicki during our SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute #WWWeek session ‘Water Security drivers of intra- and inter-household conflict’🗣️ For more insight into how information interventions affect water safety behaviour at the household level, check out the #REACH paper ‘Fear, Efficacy, and Environmental Health Risk Reporting: Complex Responses to Water Quality Test Results in Low-Income Communities’. This study used interviews, water quality monitoring and surveying methods to assess perception of water safety in Kitui County, Kenya. Results showed that responses to risk communication were determined by the specificity, framing and repetition of messaging, as well as the self-efficacy of information recipients. While gender norms and poverty threatscapes affect behaviour change, this study found that information about water safety can motivate supply-level managers to implement hazard control measures (dependent upon infrastructure, training and ongoing resourcing). I’m thrilled to announce that our paper, “Integrated water-population interactions framework: An application to assess water security in Iran,” has been published in the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2024! In this study, my co-authors Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi, Ali Bagheri, and I propose a new framework to assess water security, moving beyond the traditional focus on population growth alone. Our Integrated Water-Population Interactions (IWPI) framework explores how demographic changes—like household composition, urbanization, and shifts in education and employment—can shape water consumption and impact food and livelihood security. Using the Water-Population System Dynamics (WPSD) model, we applied this framework to Iran, revealing insights that can help policy-makers set more realistic targets for food self-sufficiency and develop adaptable water resource strategies. If you’re interested in how population dynamics can inform water security policy, you can read the full paper here: [https://lnkd.in/gwHdmaFv) #Research #WaterSecurity #PopulationDynamics #SustainableDevelopment #Publication
