I recently found out that Seagrass captures carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. Let's all plant seagrass instead of trees, right? Blue carbon ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows, also support biodiversity, protect shorelines, and sequester and store carbon. However, so far it's been tricky to map seagrass fields - which is key to preserving them. Hexagon and the nonprofit Beneath the Waves have now developed a new method that uses Leica Geosystems' bathymetric solutions to map seagrass fields, identify seagrass types and calculate their carbon storage potential.
