We're becoming bolder in asking crucial questions: When has an organisation served its original purpose? How do we preserve values and valuable assets while designing for current impact needs? Let me share a powerful example: TODAY is the merger of Aurora Group and GiveOUT to create Rainbow Giving Australia. This union, born from an extensive due diligence process, proves how thoughtful mergers can transform sector impact. Here's why it works: 1. Resource Optimisation: The merger will distribute $1 million to LGBTQIA+ communities this year alone. By combining operations, they're maximising resources that go directly to rainbow communities on the ground. This isn't just about short-term gains - it's about creating a financially sound and sustainable foundation for generations to come. 2. Sector-Wide Impact: The decision to merge wasn't made lightly - extensive due diligence showed it would benefit not just both organisations, but the entire sector. By combining complementary strengths and resources, Rainbow Giving Australia is positioned to transform the national funding landscape for LGBTQIA+ community leaders, organisations, and initiatives. 4. Future-Proofing: The merger ensures sustainable support for rainbow communities across Australia for generations to come - demonstrating how strategic mergers can create lasting impact beyond what individual organisations might achieve alone. Really interesting post by Jo Taylor on the value of mergers in the for purpose sector following the merger of Aurora Group and Give OUT to create Rainbow Giving Australia. We saw evidence of her 'why it works' points (resource optimisation; sector wide impact & future proofing) earlier this year when Alischa Ross, Nichole Maybury and I at Think Impact worked with Kathy Packenas @Michele Goldman and the team at Asthma Australia to interview stakeholders and develop a case study about the merger of six state based Asthma entities. An amazing achievement that took great vision, leadership and a determined impact focus (e.g. benefit for people with Asthma & their carers) to get across the line. Asthma Australia will be sharing the story and lessons learnt shortly.
