The European Union's Green Deal is a transformative agenda aiming to enhance sustainability across various sectors. Central to this initiative is the European Restoration Regulation, a groundbreaking legislation mandating the restoration of 20% of degraded ecosystems by 2030, with a vision to restore all by 2050. This law targets a diverse range of ecosystems, including terrestrial, coastal, freshwater, and marine environments, with specific goals for urban green spaces, pollinator populations, and agricultural peatlands. To support these ambitious objectives, the EU will leverage the expertise of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), utilizing tools like the Red List of Threatened Species and the Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions. Member States are tasked with developing comprehensive Nature Restoration Plans that take into account socio-economic and financial considerations. https://lnkd.in/e7Xz8aHs

📉 Nature-based carbon credits are a powerful tool to achieve net-zero emissions, but high-integrity is key. 🤝 We're joining forces with American Forest Foundation Conservation International Environmental Defense Fund The Nature Conservancy Wildlife Conservation Society to call on Science Based Targets initiative to include 5 key guardrails in its review of how carbon credits are used for Scope 3 emissions abatement. 🌿 Our letter stresses how, with proper science- and evidence-based guardrails, carbon credits will speed, not hinder, climate progress at a global scale.
