One area of the housing market that is often overlooked is adaptive housing - renovating a home to meet the specific needs of people who want to age in place, who are struggling with health challenges, or who are injured from an accident. Often times, aging, health, and accident related circumstances can leave a homeowner feeling like their only option is to move. But adaptive home renovations focus on delivering specific functionality and safety features, so people can continue to live an independent life in their own home. HWRI at RWU recently released Mobile Home Parks: An Opportunity for Healthy, Affordable Housing, an issue brief exploring the structure of mobile home parks in relation to health and affordability, which has been a topic discussed by state legislators over many years. Under Tenants Transforming Greater St Louis (TTGSTL) I contributed to our friends at Human Impact Partners (HIP) Corporate Health vs Community Wealth report. Their action agenda local governments can take to stop the health harms of renters inflicted by corporate landlords echos TTG’s Health & Housing Quality recommendations in Home Is Where Our Health Is Action Agenda for local governments 1. Increase ownership transparency and data access through rental registries and landlord licensing programs(TTG rec and passed in STL Dec 2023) 2. Keep residents safe in their homes by using tools that are designed to be effective with large corporate actors 3. Protect tenants from retaliation and abuses of power by implementing anti-retaliation, anti-harassment, and right-to-organize policies so that they can stay in their homes and exercise their rights (TTG rec) 4. Address the root cause of the problem: limit speculation by corporate landlords and make it harder to gamble on communities or profit from unhealthy housing 5. Resource public options that are permanently affordable and community-controlled https://lnkd.in/g2PuV4Rq https://lnkd.in/g7--tJNb #HomeIsHealth #TenantsTransformingGreaterStLouis
