The annual report is not dead! That’s my headline takeaway from yesterday’s IR Society Conference. For someone that spends a disproportionate amount of my time championing the importance of great reporting and, essentially, trying to bust the urban myth that has perpetuated over recent years that “no-one reads the annual report”, it is heartening to hear directly from both buy-side and sell-side investors that they DO read them (and sometimes even print them) to inform investment decision-making. Annual reports are still considered to be the “single version of the truth” and still the “go to document” for investors and analysts to find out more about a company. Companies need to focus on producing honest, transparent and succinct reports that communicate a clear articulation of their equity story, business model and strategic plans and progress. Meaningless, boilerplate disclosure have no place in the AR. (If only there was a mic drop emoji)
'The future of the sell side' was debated in our final plenary session, looking at the impact of post-MiFID reductions in research budgets and the resulting juniorisation of the sell side and reduction in quality research coverage, which presents an opportunity for IR teams to engage directly with the buy side. The panel also discussed the need for regulators to move to a 'value for money' model rather than focus on costs.
