R Community Episode 82 Conversation with Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir on importance of culture days
Celebrating cultural days and acknowledging multiculturalism in society are crucial for several reasons, promoting harmony, understanding, and respect among diverse communities. Here’s why they are important:
1. Fostering Social Inclusion
Cultural celebrations create spaces for individuals from different backgrounds to come together and share their unique traditions, beliefs, and customs. This fosters inclusion, making everyone feel valued and part of the broader community, regardless of their ethnicity or background.
2. Promoting Understanding and Reducing Stereotypes
By acknowledging and celebrating multiculturalism, people gain exposure to different cultures, traditions, and histories. This helps reduce ignorance, prejudice, and stereotypes, promoting a more open-minded and empathetic society.
3. Preserving Cultural Heritage
Celebrating cultural days is a way to preserve and pass down traditions, languages, and customs to future generations. It ensures that diverse cultural practices continue to thrive and are not lost due to globalization or assimilation.
4. Enhancing Community Cohesion
When a society acknowledges and celebrates its cultural diversity, it strengthens community bonds. People are encouraged to engage with one another, share their stories, and build relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.
5. Encouraging Learning and Growth
Cultural celebrations often introduce people to new perspectives, music, food, art, and ways of life. This promotes intellectual and emotional growth by broadening horizons and allowing individuals to appreciate the richness of the world's diversity.
6. Supporting Multicultural Identities
For individuals from minority communities, seeing their culture represented and celebrated publicly validates their identity. It encourages pride in their heritage and helps maintain a sense of belonging in a diverse society.
7. Promoting Global Awareness
In an increasingly interconnected world, recognizing and celebrating multiculturalism helps people appreciate global interdependence. It encourages greater awareness of international cultures and strengthens diplomatic and social ties across borders.
8. Contributing to Economic and Creative Growth
Cultural celebrations often involve art, music, performances, and cuisine from various communities.
In summary, celebrating cultural days and embracing multiculturalism helps societies build unity, respect, and appreciation for diversity. It paves the way for a more inclusive and peaceful coexistence, where everyone’s culture is recognized and valued.

In our latest publication with Anna Farmaki we examine Female Airbnb hosts' empowerment and the effect on their quality of life.
Our study explores how hosting on Airbnb empowers women across various dimensions - economic, social, psychological, and more - and how this empowerment enhances their quality of life.
Using Structural Equation Modelling on a sample of 343 female hosts, we discovered that motives and proactive attitudes play a crucial role in how empowerment is experienced. Interestingly, previous tourism experience also moderates the level of empowerment.

🌟 Celebrating International Men’s Day 🌟
Today, we celebrate the men who often go unnoticed but play crucial roles in our lives. From fathers, brothers, partners, and friends to mentors and colleagues—men contribute to society in countless ways, making sacrifices and offering support, love, and guidance.
While International Women’s Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm, let’s remember that men deserve equal recognition. It’s not about competition; it’s about acknowledging the shared journey of progress, resilience, and growth.
💬 As a woman, I strongly believe in equal celebration. If we can honor the strength, empowerment, and achievements of women on Women's Day, why not take a moment to appreciate the men who equally contribute to our lives on this day?
This International Men's Day, let’s:
🔹 Acknowledge their mental health and the importance of breaking the stigma around it.
🔹 Celebrate their achievements and positive contributions to society.
🔹 Encourage open conversations about challenges they face but rarely voice.
Being a girl, I highly promote this initiative because they too deserve recognition and appreciation.
Happy International Men’s Day to all the incredible men out there! 👏

Hosting an event? By prioritizing inclusivity, you can create a memorable experience where everyone feels respected. Ensure every person feels seen, heard, and valued with these tips!
1️⃣ A truly diverse event begins with a team and a speaker lineup that represents a range of backgrounds, ensuring everyone brings fresh and unique viewpoints.
2️⃣ Instead of using words like “ladies and gentlemen”, opt for inclusive terms like everyone, friends, guests, etc.
3️⃣ Similarly, avoid making assumptions about someone’s gender identity based on their appearance or name. You can provide stickers or badges where people can mention their pronouns.
4️⃣ Choose a venue that is accessible to people with disabilities. This includes wheelchair access and clearly marked accessible restrooms.
5️⃣ Make sure that the event menu includes a variety of food options that cater to different dietary needs and cultural preferences.
Creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued is essential for an enjoyable and successful event.

Over the past few months, I have been settling into my new role as Chair for DIO’s Social Mobility Network. Social Mobility is a complex issue, and one thing is abundantly clear: we can only strive to make a change together. Intersectionality is crucial, and our journey towards creating a diverse and inclusive workplace has only just begun.
Working across departments and external industry will help us to grow and look at social mobility through a different lens.
My question to you: How do you think we can make a real change?
Together we CAN make a difference! And, everyone needs to be part of the change. What ‘Single Step’ can you take to help us progress towards equality?

This International Women's Day is a truly special one for us as, in the spirit of #InspireInclusion, we are delighted to launch The Ekta Network!
🔥 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞?
We are a network founded 𝐛𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬. Our purpose is to bring together visible role models, shine a light on talent and provide opportunities for allyship and growth to drive greater inclusivity in the industry.
Ekta stands for unity, harmony, and forging team spirit in Sanskrit, one of the main early languages in South Asia.... but more about that in a future post!
🔥 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤?!
We hear you! To that we say - women of colour comprise one of the fastest-growing segments in the workforce, yet are often underrepresented. We might be the first, the few or the only* ones in a department or company, and it can get quite lonely at, or on the way to, the top... The Ekta Network is an opportunity to change that. We want to help our members and allies both to grow and fulfil their professional aspirations and appreciate diversity within the community - 'South Asian' is not a single experience!
🔥 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐈 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧?
Follow this page! Over the coming months we will share more about why we exist, our values and showcase opportunities for networking and engagement events.
🔥 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝?
Like and share this post with your network! Look out for more from us in the coming weeks about how you can join, opportunities to volunteer or share your ideas for driving inclusivity and amplifying South Asian Voices.
