Why does blood clot after leaving the blood vessels? The answer is: - When human blood is exposed to air, the blood clotting process occurs due to the presence of a factor inside the blood called "Thromboxane", which is a protein produced by platelet cells inside the blood. When the blood is exposed to air, thromboxane begins to react with the oxygen in the air, which leads to stimulating the cells and platelets to stick together. #medical_laboratory #Haematology

What does it mean when your blood sample needs a 'spin' ? I often get asked this especially when clients are booking in for a blood test. Spinning a blood sample is a process that requires a Centrifuge. After the blood is drawn it is placed in the Centrifuge machine which spins the blood at high speed and separates the components of the blood based on density. The densest components move outwards to the bottom and the lighter stay on top. Having the blood separated in this way is essential for diagnostic purposes. For example the plasma part of the blood is used to test cholesterol and liver enzymes. I have a mobile centrifuge which means I can provide a blood draw and spin in the comfort of your own home.

ABO blood groop problem and solution ABO blood group system, the classification of human blood based on the inherited properties of red blood cells (erythrocytes) as determined by the presence or absence of the antigens A and B, which are carried on the surface of the red cells. Persons may thus have type A, type B, type O, or type AB blood. Youtube video: https://lnkd.in/dutmAaXi #nikolaysgeneticslessons

Word of the Week: Coagulation Cascade: Also called the clotting system. This is a large system of molecules that work together to produce a clot to stop bleeding. It includes both clotting factors and anticoagulants. Check out this word and others in our Hemo B Glossary: https://lnkd.in/gdWZa9bf

How our body stops the bleeding when we injure ourselves. 🍁When we injure ourselves and start to bleed, this is what happens: 1️⃣Our blood vessels become narrower. This reduces the flow of blood to the injured tissue, limiting the loss of blood. 2️⃣Blood platelets in the bloodstream, known as thrombocytes, attach to the damaged area of the blood vessel and clump together to reduce the bleeding. 3️⃣The body then activates a number of substances in the blood and the tissue. These substances solidify the clump by forming a special protein and fix the clump at the wound. These substances are called clotting factors or coagulation factors. 🧾A fun fact: There are 13 clotting factors in human blood and tissues. Most of them are made in the liver. Video Source: S. Fig.: A diagram of a section of an alveolus with a pulmonary capillary 𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗚𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗦 Alveoli are the primary sites of exchange of gases. Gaseous Exchange in Lungs ● At alveoli level, gaseous exchange occur through respiratory membrane (diffusion membrane) which is 0.2 mm thick (total thickness is much less than a mm). ● 𝗜𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: (i) Alveolar epithelium (thin squamous epithelium) (ii) Basement substance in between them (composed of a thin basement membrane supporting the squamous epithelium and the basement membrane surrounding the single layer endothelial cells of capillaries) (iii) Endothelium of alveolar blood capillaries ● Exchange of gases also occur between blood and tissues. ● O2 and CO2 are exchanged in these sites by simple diffusion mainly based on pressure/concentration gradient ● Pressure contributed by an individual gas in a mixture of gases is called partial pressure and is represented as pO2 for oxygen and pCO2 for carbon dioxide.
