That’s all well and good and I agree something needs to be done with The Grand but there are fundamental issues that need fixing first. Scarborough has a massive pothole issue and the council seems to think that filling the holes with gravel will fix the problem. There’s a massive issue with drainage in Falsgrave park causing it to be either a bog or an ice rink. The council won’t grit it in the winter for fear of liability if someone has an accident, in the meantime, residents, especially the older generation fear taking a walk in the winter because they don’t want to fall. The A64 has had “talks” about it being a dual carriage way for years, when will this become a reality? There’s plots of land/warehouse at the back of Morrison’s that would be ideal for rock climbing/ice rink/trampoline centre to encourage residents and visitors all year round. What will be done about the fact there are Poundlands and charity shops but nowhere to encourage locals to shop local building a sustainable local economy? Surely these are issues that should be tackled before injecting millions of, presumably tax payers’ money into a project that will take years to come to fruition or is this a project for you purely to attract voters?

Associate Director @ Cavendish | Councillor @ North Yorkshire Council | 2024 Mayoral Candidate

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫. The choice is between the bold action we need, or more of the same. Others will stand by as our heritage disintegrates. I will rescue it. They’ll accept decline. I’ll reverse it. I have a grand plan for Scarborough. This isn’t a hotel renovation, it’s a revolution. And this isn’t just about one town. It’s an example of the level of my ambition for North Yorkshire. Eyesores transformed at long last. Civic pride restored. The high street brought back to life. 🗳️ Thursday’s vote will determine the future of Scarborough, and our whole county. Some of the things you mention don’t fall in the Mayors jurisdiction, the council’s are responsible for pot holes and gritting. The Mayor of Tees Valley bought an airport!! He over ruled a housing plan and took it off Peel who also owned Doncaster, it has absolutely been the best thing for the region! Stockton have an £8m Hampton by Hilton, that encouraged the opening of the Globe which now features west end shows and footfall has picked up 60% in the town centre so a hotel may be the key to more investment. The council can’t afford the £333m to dual the A64 on their own and need funding from the Mayor to even consider this as an option. Hope this helps 😊

Completely agree. I would also say that if the money is found to buy a hotel that isn’t currently for sale, couldn’t that money be put to better use within the community? Scarborough has 2 of the most deprived communities not just in the county, but the UK so surely supporting the local residents within those areas is a bit more important than the clickbait hotel purchase we keep hearing about.

I agree with all your words and thoughts look after the town and its infrastructure, and its community. Once the infrastructure is in place feel free to look at the Grand, please look after the community first before applying any tax payer's money to someone body else's property that does not belong to the community.
