Very sad to hear of the destruction of more than 30 architectural gems, including Modernist, Beaux-Arts, Victorian, Spanish Revival and Craftsman style buildings. Many were privately owned homes, while others fulfilled community uses or were places of worship. All are now lost, however perhaps this is an opportunity to restore these important historic structures and plan for a more sustainable and resilient future? https://lnkd.in/eBqQnqMm

Ever wondered where the phrase ‘daylight robbery’ came from? 🔨💡 Our property is a classic example! After the war, the government was short on cash and introduced a window tax. Many windows were bricked up to avoid paying it — reducing natural light and leading to the phrase "daylight robbery." This is exactly what has happened in our Victroian property. We'll restore this window by removing the brickwork to add more natural light to this amazing period property. It’s all about preserving the property's heritage whilst adding value. What’s the strangest thing have you uncovered in period properties? #PropertyRenovation #History #VictorianArchitecture #RenovationProject

The Historic House Trust of New York City is thrilled to announce the launch of its Paint to Preserve Program, a momentous new initiative designed to complete critical painting projects at its 23 partner historic sites citywide. Painting is a critical preservation tool that prevents the exterior deterioration of historic wood structures. This program will proactively maintain historic house exteriors, preserving these sites and making them stronger and more sustainable pillars of their communities for years to come. This important effort is funded by Paint to Preserve founding supporter Benjamin Moore, and will be completed thanks to the partnership of the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. We're so grateful for our wonderful partnerships. It take a vibrant community to ensure that these historic treasures are preserved for future generations. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e2-tK_b4

If trees could talk the history some would tell. Learning from past city planning and urban forest management efforts can help us today plan for more sustainable urban forests and cities. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. Take the time to learn with and from your community to manage and grow sustainable urban forests and partnerships into the future.
Three years ago urban forester John Kilcullen gave us the wildly popular "Trees and Homes of Staten Island: Then and Now" for City Trees. The historical images are tax photos from 1940. The architectural and historical notes merge with the tree histories in the most satisfying way! https://lnkd.in/eXFuYpSa Rachel Habig-Myers Earl Eutsler Darren Green Michael (Mike) Martini

#1812Project: Happy New Years Eve!, "some people are trying to make the claim, that an advanced, ancient civilization built great utopian cities, all over the world". "& then it might turn into something weird, like Tartaria", "they exaggerate & distort & dramatize this loss & destruction, tapping into our fear, that some hidden power is controlling which parts of History that we're allowed to remember"- -he states with arrogance, & all we need do is just to correct the one date, there is no argument for the NMSZ, what had actually occurred December 16, 1811 was a massive meteor-impact, to northeastern Marshall county, Mississippi, the entire embayment is an enormous astrobleme- -& IF there is no one understanding the functions of our olde-world, ornate architecture, then what happened- -Cathedral means "spiral-cathode", Pyramid means "fire in the middle", written in the names themselves- Sungrazer: https://lnkd.in/esacW-fr -"Could an advanced ancient civilization have built grand utopian cities all over the world—only to have them destroyed or covered up? In this video, we explore the real historical “cover-up” behind these provocative photos, focusing on the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Join me and architectural conspiracy expert Zach Mortice explore the iconic “White City” at the World’s Fair which birthed modern urban planning—and might have accidentally fueled the Tartarian conspiracy theories. We’ll take on why these grand structures vanished, the rise of the City Beautiful Movement, and how Parisian-style boulevards replaced entire communities in American cities..."-

Is your property historic, or is it just old? Believe it or not, there are some key differences between the two, despite what some older relatives may tell you (no offense to your grandma or grandpa). You can consult local preservation societies, investigate building permits from when your building was constructed, and even get some clues from the physical traits of the property to help guide your search. Dive into the details: https://hubs.la/Q02ZL7ZY0 If you find out your building has historical significance, we would love to know more about it! On a recent drive through the Norfolk countryside my kids were talking to me about history (#horriblehistories is currently our favourite TV programme!) and they were asking about Church Towers. Specifically why some are round and some are square. I replied that the round ones tended to be from the Saxon era, to which they replied 'Yes, but why are they round?' This I didn't know, so we did some research............. The round towers are most common in East Anglia due to the use of flint as the most available stone for building. Unlike other areas where softer stone is available that can be formed into blocks. It's difficult to build corners from flint (see more recent flint buildings with Brick Quoin's ). So, the towers were built without corners. The circular shape is also inherently strong - though it seems that the defence position is less relevant as they tend to be short. East Anglia, and most notably Norfolk has the majority of round tower churches. Everyday is a school day................. #HistoricPreservation #BuildingConservation #ArchitecturalHeritage #RestorationExperts #HeritageBuildings #ConservationSpecialists #HistoricArchitecture #PreserveHistory #CulturalHeritage #HistoricRenovation #ArchitecturalConservation #HeritageRestoration #HistoricBuildingCare

A thoughtful analysis in this article in Governing: "But preservation serves the vital purpose of helping people to understand, appreciate and connect with their local history at a time when historical awareness is a missing element in much of America. If preservation has gone too far, it has gone too far in the right direction. We ought to be able to manage it without denigrating the things it has achieved." Equity-based preservation is the way forward. https://lnkd.in/gPGp3Jc2 #HistoricPreservation #equity #UrbanDesign

The Swanage Old Lock Up and Water Pump, is a rare and well-preserved example of a historic lock up. These small buildings, often referred to as round houses or clinks, were used as temporary holding cells for offenders awaiting trial before a magistrate. The lock up at Swanage, located next to the Town Hall, is an excellent example of this type of structure, which typically features a small, windowless stone building with ventilation grilles near the eaves. Fewer than 300 of these types of lock ups have been recorded across the UK. Often overlooked, these buildings were important in the maintenance of law and order before the advent of modern police stations. 📷: David Lovell, Historic England website #EverydayHeritage #LockUps #HistoricBuildings #HistoricPlaces #Uk #History #HeritageConservation #Heritage #HiddenHistory #Swanage #Dorset

Preservation involves replacing materials with exact replicas, while restoration uses modern materials while maintaining the original character. For the Ray House, a restoration was the better route. It's all about preserving the character while making it functional for modern use. #TheRayHouse #HistoricPreservation #HistoricHomeRestoration
