Interested in Unrestricted Funding? 🌟 At the heart of building equitable relationships between funders and charities lies Unrestricted Funding. Defined as grants that can be "spent or applied at the discretion of the trustees to further any of the charity’s purposes"; it is a key factor in empowering charities to achieve their long term charitable mission. This is an insightful piece of research from the Institute For Voluntary Action Research , on the impact of unrestricted funding. Here are the highlights: - A review of various approaches and definitions of impact - A practical framework for assessing the impact of unrestricted funding - An “open and trusting” approach to improve unrestricted funding impact practice In addition, it includes practical insights from the Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales , Esmée Fairbairn Foundation , Pears Foundation , Peter Minet Trust, and Impetus - Backing the best. Well done to Christopher Mills Mill and the team for this valuable contribution! 🙌 Looking forward to more insight on this during the upcoming webinar on July 11th! The story so far... April 2023 Following the initial conversation with a wider group of young people asking the question: What If?, a core group of five young people (18-25) met to plan what this new young person-led organisation could look like. We explored what change we wanted to see in our communities, why we wanted to see it and how to put it into action. As a group we decided that we wanted to commit to: • Reaching young people where they are at; meeting practical and social-emotional needs by building long-term relationships and tailoring support to each individual. • Inviting young people into community and belonging by running positive activities, providing safe spaces, and developing a network of support through local partnerships. • Creating opportunities for young people to build skills, gain experience and lead in shaping change, influencing local strategy and practice. We then committed to the next steps in setting up as a charity, whilst being incubated by Gateway Church Swindon who shared our vision and values. And so WAY was born. #WAY #WAYUK #WAYSwindon #WAYmentors #makelastingchange #volunteerswindon #youngleadersswindon

📌 [Report] - Social Connectedness and Generosity: A Look at How Associational Life and Social Connections Influence Volunteering and Giving (and Vice Versa) This report, the second of two reports that the Do Good Institute has produced for the Generosity Commission, focuses on the ways in which interpersonal relationships and participation in community associations and organizations influence the decisions people make about donating money or contributing their time to organizations. The report found that people who volunteered in the previous year were more likely to give in the current year by 14.5 percent, and people who gave in the previous year were 9.3 percent more likely to volunteer in the current year. “As nonprofits attempt to solve social problems, they must solicit both government funding and private funding from philanthropy and, occasionally, even from corporations. What this means is that progressive agendas depend on funding sources that are ultimately invested in preserving the profit motive.” See what else Steve Dubb and Rithika Ramamurthy have to say in the article, “Corporate Capture—Can We Find a Way Out?”: https://bit.ly/3MEUX64

Private philanthropic foundations play an increasingly important role in development, providing vital funding for areas like global public health, education, rights movements, and clean energy. Although philanthropic funding is smaller in volume terms than aid flows, it can be more flexible, innovative, and disruptive than funding from other sources. Here’s the truth about philanthropy… Small foundations might not make headlines, but their impact on grassroots philanthropy is both profound and inspiring. These organizations focus on specific communities, provide them with essential supplies and targeted financial assistance to those who need it the most. Despite facing limitations such as low funding and little recognition, they bring change with their passion and commitment. Their efforts, often supported by local volunteers, not only bolster vulnerable areas but also raise awareness about critical issues that larger entities might overlook. It is local volunteers who join them and strengthen vulnerable communities and highlight major issues, which is often missed by larger organizations. Next time you hear of a small foundation, consider lending your support or voice. Your support helps amplify their mission and extend their reach. #SmallFoundations #GrassrootsPhilanthropy #CommunitySupport

The evidence submission portal is now live and will be open until the end of the year. ICON is seeking evidence from individuals about the neighbourhoods they live in as well as from organisations such as thinks tanks, academic institutions, charities, community groups, funders and local government. There are five core questions in this initial phase: 1. There are different conceptions/definitions of a neighbourhood, which makes most sense given the Commission’s remit? 2. Why do neighbourhoods matter: what do we know about how different socio-economic needs cluster and interact at the neighbourhood level? 3. How do people experience living in the most deprived neighbourhoods? 4. What are the interventions that have had most impact at a neighbourhood level? 5. What does this mean for building an effective neighbourhood policy both nationally and at regional and local authority levels? For more information and to submit your evidence please go to: https://lnkd.in/e5XvPReh

AACSB International featured research by Daniela Goya-Tocchetto, assistant professor of organization and human resources, in its May 2024 Research Roundup. Goya-Tocchetto’s study found that prompting people to consider how their lives will impact future generations leads them to give more to charity and less to family members, finding evidence of the “Andrew Carnegie Effect.” Read the full article - http://ms.spr.ly/6044YcjBw #UBuffalo #UBMgt #facultyresearch

WhatNext #ServiceSunday Do You Know? Service is the act of helping or doing work for others. It involves offering one’s time, skills, or resources to meet the needs of individuals, communities, or organizations. Service can take many forms, from volunteering at local charities, mentoring young people, or assisting a neighbor, to working in professions that support the public good, like teaching, healthcare, or social work. © WhatNext Africa November 3, 2024 #WhatNextAfrica #LifeProtocols #LivingLegacy #ServiceSunday
