Hot off the press (in Routledge Taylor & Francis Group Leisure Studies)!!
Do the relationships between governments and residents matter in getting people's support for mega sport events? Does the way in which governments respond to crisis matter?
In short, yes, they all matter and it's about time we focus more on public relations and communications with key publics!

I had written out the whole speech in advance and then read it out word for word, barely daring to look up at the audience. There was no way I was taking any questions.
It was 2002, and I was debuting at the UCD James Joyce Maiden Speakers debating competition. Dropping my script would have been like jumping in at the deep end without armbands. The fear of sinking in public made me hold on to my handwritten pages for dear life.
It was a missed opportunity, and it bothered me for a long time. To make up for it, two years ago I joined Brussels Debaters. Here you get the motion 15 minutes in advance, so it’s hard to write a speech. You stand up, take a look at the audience, and pray that you’ll make it through six minutes without stalling or losing your train of thought.
It’s both exhilarating and daunting. It also makes my work-related public speaking seem much easier. Saying stuff that I have said many times before is a lot easier than making things up on the spot.
Public speaking is an important part of most careers. It’s probably even more important in the world of associations and public affairs. If you want to get better at it, come along to Brussels Debaters.
They’re a friendly bunch and accept speakers with all levels of experience.
Polish up your skills here so that you can excel at work.

Reminder!! The Internal Side of Public Affairs: Online Discussion 3
🌐 Join the third Exclusive Online Discussion on the Internal Side of Public Affairs! 🌐
After the success of the opening two online discussions we are back again for those of you passionate and interested in the internal success of your public affairs work. In this third discussion we will focus on an issue that was raised in both previous online discussions – what constitutes value in Public Affairs Work. We are going to spend our time looking at;
✅ How do you identify, articulate and communicate the value of your Public Affairs work
- What different types of value can Public Affairs deliver to an organization
- How do you find what is of value to your organization
- How do you best communicate this value – and your progress in achieving it
- What does your leadership need to understand / hear from you on value
You need to know what value your organization (or client - be that internal or external) is looking for so you can deliver success. This is not just what they (say they) want but also the other ways you can deliver value. So, what exactly constitutes value, and how can you find out what it is? I hope you can join us to share your experience and ideas.

The Internal Side of Public Affairs: Exclusive Online Discussion 2
🌐 Join the second Exclusive Online Discussion on the Internal Side of Public Affairs! 🌐
After the success of our first online discussion we are back again for those of you passionate and interested in the internal success of your public affairs work. So, this time around we will focus our discussions and stay with the two main themes that came out of the first webinar:
✅ The place of Public Affairs in an organization – and how to best work with this
- Reporting Lines
- Structures
- Adjacent functions and how to manage overlap / ‘internal politics’
✅ How to articulate and sell the value of your Public Affairs work
- What a C-Suite needs to understand / hear from you
- How to engage your senior leaders and organization
We started to get into both of these subjects in our first webinar – and I hope that this time around we can make even more progress given that these two topics seemed to speak to everyone on the call (no matter your geography or role). They are clearly critical questions for any Public Affairs professional so I hope you are able to come and join us for our second dynamic one-hour virtual discussion.
📅 Date: 21st May
