“So why should we care?” “This sounds expensive.” “This isn’t for us.” Over the last three years advocating on Capitol Hill, we’ve had some terrible meetings. Not every meeting will be a success. We’ve left meetings and felt like we bombed it. Remember, it only takes one “yes” to start a movement. Nothing happens overnight. You may hear 1,000 “no’s” before the “yes”. Keep going. After each failed meeting, re-play the conversation and figure out where it went off track. Course correct and try again. Change is never easy. Controversial thoughts coming at you LinkedIn land… When did doing the right thing become a questionable action? Last week The Home of Record Project received an assistance request from a United States Marine Corps veteran who had some extremely bad luck and hit rock bottom. We’ve been walking this Marine through the many other resources that are out there to get the assistance needed on many action items on their list. It is mind blowing the amount of pushback and questioning received as well the cookie cutter responses asking if we had reached out to the usual other organizations who either don’t really do any tangible work, have a 30+ day waiting period, or aren’t able to assist for other one or another reason. Waste of tax dollars and donors money. And we wonder why the suicide rate among veterans is through the roof. We keep throwing money at the wrong thing. Let’s start earlier on to avoid the situation in the first place. I promise it would be cheaper. Open your aperture even just a little bit. We all need to be doing better. “U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers (R-AL) and Adam Smith (D-WA), Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, along with Don Bacon (R-NE) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Quality of Life Panel, sent a letter calling on President Biden to support improving the quality of life for service members and military families in his Fiscal Year 2025 Department of Defense Budget request. In the letter, the members wrote, “Our service members represent the best our nation has to offer and are central to our national security. The All-Volunteer Force has been the foundation of America’s national defense for the last five decades. Yet the committee’s quality of life inquiry thus far has revealed an alarming erosion of military quality of life that, if not addressed quickly, will soon place the All-Volunteer Force at risk.
