Along with Michelle Miranda, Rebecca Bucht and Keith Inman, I am delighted to share this new paper by Patrick Buzzini, part of the Forensic Science International Special Issue about "The Sydney Declaration and the Status of Forensic Science" entitled Kirk’s ‘Ontogeny of Criminalistics’ revisited under the lens of the Sydney Declaration. 👉 https://lnkd.in/g6nH6-jS Paper's Highlights: - Paul Kirk’s 1963 commentary ‘The Ontogeny of Criminalistics’ is still relevant nowadays. - Kirk’s principles and scope of forensic science are examined through the Sydney Declaration - Progress is still mostly technical and practical rather than fundamental and theoretical - Kirk’s principle alone is inadequate to cover the potential and scope of forensic science - Kirk’s ‘science of individualization’ ought to be replaced with the ‘science of traces’ "Prof. Kirk’s concluding interrogative in the Ontogeny still remains relevant: “Is it not time to make a serious effort to define a goal so that we may all talk about the same thing and move in similar directions?” Considering the trace-centric definition and the principles of forensic science in the Sydney Declaration as a goal, can’t we claim to have a path for moving in similar directions?" Is it blood? This is one of the many questions forensic experts tackle daily. The Kastle-Meyer (KM) test, a quick and straightforward presumptive test for blood, provides vital initial answers in forensic investigations. This week, our first-year students at the University of Derby are studying this topic, learning how science meets real-world problem-solving in forensic analysis.
