PHASE Program Participation – A Transformative Experience I had the privilege of participating in the PHASE (Planetary Health Africa-Japan Strategic and Collaborative Education) Program in February 2024, organized by the Ministry of education Japan, (MEXT) and in partnership with Kenyatta University. The program was hosted by Nagasaki University (Japan). It was an incredibly fruitful and interactive experience, where we delved into key aspects of becoming an intercultural bridge person. Some of the topics covered included: ü Creating a collaborative community ü Becoming an intercultural bridge person ü The mind's role in intercultural development ü Identifying ways to bridge cultural differences One of the case studies focused on Kisumu County, which is heavily affected by mosquitoes, providing an interesting context for intercultural problem-solving. The program gave me a new perspective on what it means to truly be an intercultural bridge, emphasizing patience, understanding, and the ability to appreciate diverse perspectives. A memorable moment during the program was when a student from Nagasaki University shared her experience learning to play the piano. She described how, in the beginning, it took immense concentration, but with time, she built neural pathways that allowed her to play effortlessly. As a pianist myself, I could completely relate to her journey – from conscious effort to mastery. This powerful analogy reminded me how we can learn anything with time, patience, and persistence. Ultimately, the greatest lesson I took away from this experience is that being an intercultural bridge requires patience with others, as well as a genuine effort to understand their perspectives and backgrounds. #PHASEProgram #KenyattaUniversity #NagasakiUniversity #InterculturalBridge #GlobalLearning #CulturalDiversity #PianoJourney #PatienceAndPersistence #Collaboration #LifelongLearning
