🌽The Reality of Farming: A Response to Misleading Narratives 🌽🚜 Lately, I've come across images and messages promoting farming as a simple, tax-free, and idyllic lifestyle. One such message encourages people to purchase 5 acres of agricultural land, engage in integrated farming, and enjoy fresh air while supposedly increasing their lifespan. While the notion of a tax-free and subsidized farming life sounds appealing, it oversimplifies the realities and challenges of farming. 🔹Farming is Not Easy: As someone with a farming background, I can confidently say that farming is far from easy. My father is a farmer, and I have witnessed firsthand the immense physical labor, significant financial investment, and deep understanding of agricultural practices it requires. The process involves battling unpredictable weather conditions, pests, and fluctuating market prices. Additionally, the financial risk is high, with farmers often facing debts due to crop failures or low yields. 🔹Integrated Farming: A Complex System: Integrated farming, which combines various agricultural activities like crop cultivation, livestock rearing, and aquaculture, demands extensive knowledge and skill. It is not merely a matter of owning land; it requires meticulous planning, constant monitoring, and efficient resource management. The idea that anyone can effortlessly succeed in integrated farming is misleading and diminishes the hard work of those who are genuinely committed to this demanding profession. 🔹Subsidies and Support: Not a Universal Solution: While there are subsidies available, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Accessing these subsidies often involves navigating bureaucratic hurdles, and not all farmers benefit equally. Moreover, the financial support provided is sometimes insufficient to cover the high costs of farming inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. 🔹A Call for Realistic Narratives: It is essential to promote a realistic understanding of farming rather than romanticizing it. Potential new farmers should be aware of the challenges and risks involved. Providing accurate information and support can lead to more sustainable and successful agricultural practices. Farming is a noble and vital profession that requires dedication, resilience, and expertise. Instead of oversimplifying its complexities, let's acknowledge and support the hard work of our farmers. #Farming #Agriculture #RealityCheck #SupportFarmers #UnionBudget2024 #AgricultureReality

The Double-Edged Sword of Mechanization in Kenya’s Agricultural Sector: Balancing Progress with Soil Health Mechanization is undeniably transforming agriculture in Kenya. The rise of organizations providing mechanization services is a game-changer, making advanced farming equipment accessible to smallholder farmers who can’t afford to buy their own tractors. This has led to increased efficiency, higher productivity, and the potential for enhanced economic growth. However, there’s a significant downside that needs urgent attention. Many mechanization providers are not adequately cleaning their machines between farms, leading to the unintentional spread of soilborne diseases and pests. These pathogens and pests can remain in the soil for years, causing long-term damage to crop yields and soil health. This silent crisis undermines the very benefits mechanization aims to bring. https://lnkd.in/gS9C9b5V

“One Crore farmers to be initiated into natural farming in the next two years, supported by certifications and branding,” said Nirmala Sitharaman yesterday at the Union Budget 2025. As participants in the agricultural ecosystem, let us take a deep dive into what natural farming is, what its objectives are, and how it can become a more widespread agricultural practice. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴? As per Niti Ayog: “Natural Farming is a chemical-free traditional farming method. It is considered as an agroecology based diversified farming system which integrates crops, trees and livestock with functional biodiversity” The GOI created the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) in 2023-24 with the following 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: - ☘Sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes ☘Adapting and building resilience to climate change and ☘Reducing greenhouses gas emissions wherever possible 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? The success of NMNF will require behavioral change in farmers to shift from chemical-based inputs to locally produced inputs. This requires a continuous creation of awareness, training, handholding, and capacity building. As per yesterday’s budget, 10,000 need-based bio-input resource centres will be established for the same. I applaud this initiative, and truly believe that by embracing natural farming and organic farming practices, we can create a more sustainable, resilient, and prosperous agricultural landscape, ultimately feeding unadulterated and nutritious food to more and more people. #budget #agriculture #naturalfarming #farming #creatingahealthierfuture #adyaorganics image source: Policy Circle Bureau
