We get to sleep like a baby with little worry about our country being attacked. On this day in 1918, World War I came to an end. The armistice found the two most prominent Texas units on active service in France. The Ninetieth Division was fighting its way through the Meuse-Argonne, while the Thirty-Sixth Division was resting behind the lines after suffering heavy casualties in the same offensive. A total of 198,000 Texans saw service in the armed forces during the course of the war. Five thousand one hundred and seventy-one Texans, including one nurse, died in the armed services; 4,748 of the dead served in the army. More than a third of the total deaths occurred inside the United States, many of them as a result of the influenza epidemic of 1918. Four Texans were awarded the Medal of Honor. U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor Recipient William Morgan: On February 25, 1969, Corporal Morgan was serving as a squad leader with his Company. While participating in Operation Dewey Canyon, one of the squads of Cpl. Morgan's platoon was temporarily pinned down and sustained several casualties while attacking a North Vietnamese Army force occupying a heavily fortified bunker complex. Observing that two of the wounded marines had fallen in a position dangerously exposed to the enemy fire and that all attempts to evacuate them were halted by a heavy volume of automatic-weapons fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Cpl. Morgan unhesitatingly maneuvered through the dense jungle undergrowth to a road that passed in front of a hostile emplacement which was the principal source of enemy fire. Fully aware of the possible consequences of his valiant action, but thinking only of the welfare of his injured companions, Cpl. Morgan shouted words of encouragement to them as he initiated an aggressive assault against the hostile bunker. Cpl. Morgan unhesistantly charged across the open road, firing his weapon into the bunker. His tactic worked and the enemy soldiers turned all their fire in his direction. Despite being struck by mutliple enemy bullets, Cpl. Morgan continued his charge until the next hail of fire struck and mortally wounded him. By sacrificing his life with his diversionary tactic it enabled the remainder of his squad to retrieve their casualties and overrun the enemy position. His heroic and determined actions saved the lives of two fellow marines and were instrumental in the subsequent defeat of the enemy. 98 days from idea to execution. Bomber modifications began roughly 70 days in. These days, we can’t get on contract in less than 3 months. Today, industry is needed to advance US Air Power. We need PPBE reform and better ways to navigate the contracting process.

Today is Veterans Day—a time to honor those who have served, sacrificed, and dedicated their lives for our country and our freedom. It is disheartening, however, that many companies don’t formally recognize or celebrate this day. Given that U.S. organizations (and beyond) benefit from the security and liberties protected by our veterans, acknowledging this day isn’t just symbolic; it’s a demonstration of respect, gratitude, and unity. One day… That’s all we ask to recognize the courage, sacrifice, and service of our military veterans. For many organizations, observing Veterans Day as a day off isn’t standard practice, but it should be. This isn’t about shutting down operations for the sake of it—it’s about recognizing the contributions of those who served, giving employees time to reflect, and demonstrating real gratitude as a community.
