💡 Do you have a startup, or a strong idea for a startup? 🚀 👐 Join us on 10th June at the "Nordic Founder Hotseat: Pitch Your Startup Idea to Investors & Experts" (online) pitching event organized by Founder Institute Nordics and moderated by Naimul Abd (CEO, Connect Sverige Region Öst). 👉 At this event, founders can pitch their startup ideas in an elevator pitch format to startup experts and investors for rapid feedback. No formal pitch deck is needed. Even if you don't want to pitch, you can learn from other founders pitching and watch how the panel/jury analyzes business ideas and elevator pitches. 🎤 🌟 At the event, in addition to being part of the panelist/Pitching Jury, I will also be speaking about my experiences as an angel investor, LP, board member, and business advisor in startups and scale-ups over the challenging past years. Currently, we are seeing a market that appears to be brightening, and many companies in my portfolio are starting to perform very well. The challenge is to maintain reasonable short-term expectations while continuing to build companies poised for international and global success. Those who can balance caution and ambition will be the winners. 🌍🏆📈 #investments #startup #pitch #funding

Investing in startups is challenging because there is no track record to assess. If I were to back one, my first focus would be on the management team. Are they aligned in vision? Is their collaboration productive? Do they have clear meeting rhythms and accountability? A cohesive leadership team is crucial for navigating the startup journey. Next, I’d evaluate the strategic plan—both short-term (3-5 years) and long-term. Even if the goal is an exit in 10 years, I’d want to see a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) for growth and positioning for acquisitions after the exit. Execution is critical. Strong founders can launch an idea, but building a scalable business requires embedding core values, purpose, and brand promise into execution. Cash management is also a priority. I’d need a clear plan for long-term revenue and, more importantly, short-term cash flow. Don’t just convince me your burn rate is accurate—show me you can manage and anticipate cash flow effectively. This process is easier for established companies, but startups need deeper scrutiny of both the people and the plan.
What do investors look for before backing a company? We asked Greylock’s Corinne Marie Riley, who works with early-stage founders in the AI space, that exact question. “We love to back people who do have deep insight and a technology vision into the product that they’re building,” says Riley. But it doesn’t stop there. According to Riley, it’s equally important to invest in a candidate who can recruit a stellar team to work alongside them. A key determinant of success, she says, is “knowing where your personal faults are and how you can complement them with other people.” Weigh in below: What qualities should investors look for in founders before deciding to back a company?
