I want to take a moment to give a well-deserved shout-out to the AIMS Center, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. But this milestone is just one of their many remarkable accomplishments. How many organizations can say they had the foresight to push boundaries decades ago, sustain their mission for so long, and develop the most research-backed integrated behavioral health (IBH) intervention? The AIMS Center has achieved this and more: Encouraging CMS to create new billing codes. Expanding their model beyond mild to moderate depression and anxiety in primary care to include multiple specialties and a broader spectrum of behavioral health conditions. Inspiring the creation of multiple startups. Having their work referenced in a U.S. President's agenda to expand behavioral health nationwide. At a recent conference, where an obvious misunderstanding of the model was presented, I had the chance to ask a friend and insider how they handle situations where the message isn’t fully grasped. They smiled knowingly and replied, “The mission and outcomes are far more important than the minor details.” Here’s to 20 years of groundbreaking work and unwavering dedication to advancing integrated behavioral health.

Ending 2024 with a bang! As the year ends, I'm thrilled to share that my latest open-access publication with the Mental Health Accessibility and Policy Solutions Lab (MAPS) Lab has been published. This piece is fitting to be revisiting at the end of the year as it focuses on tokenism, a subject I have become more unapologetically vocal about in my work this year. You can expect me to continue to bring this energy to my activism in 2025. Full Article: https://lnkd.in/e-zQuFKm “The recent popularization of young adult engagement in health research has taken on the character of a trend, often more fashionable than substantive…the challenge lies with well-intentioned health researchers who, despite their good intentions, unknowingly perpetuate hierarchical and inequitable practices. These health researchers often lack the foundational understanding, ideological grounding, or contextual knowledge to fully embody the egalitarian principles that participatory approaches demand….To be very clear, the issue is not malice but insidiousness; health researchers, often shaped by deeply ingrained institutional norms, retrofitting participatory practices into traditional academic frameworks, stripping them of their emancipatory potential. The result is a hollowed-out version of participation that reinforces, rather than dismantles, existing inequities.”
