Economies cannot reach their full potential if half the population is systematically blocked from full participation. Ensuring equality in decision-making means that everyone has the opportunity and ability to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their lives at all levels of society.
Meaningful participation requires not only access to decision-making processes but also the ability to actively engage and influence the design and outcomes of those decisions. This is the impact we strive for through the Think Equal Lead Smart (TELS) initiative—creating an environment where women’s voices lead to inclusive policies and sustainable solutions that benefit everyone in society. #ThinkEqualLeadSmarthttps://lnkd.in/gTExWrpQ
Day 1: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that starts on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and runs until Human Rights Day on 10th of December.
Each day throughout the campaign, we'll be sharing our projects to raise awareness, share resources and build a whole-community approach to changing the culture.
With Ben Serlin, I lead Changing the Culture (CtC) at Middlesex University - a programme of initiatives committed to educating, empowering and inspiring student engagement in social justice projects that have a transformative impact on our students and our local community. CtC participates every year in #16DayofActivism to highlight the work co-created with students, colleagues and community partners to support the call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
On Day One of 16 Days of Activism, we are spotlighting #HearMyVoice – our collaborative initiative in partnership with the London Borough of Barnet, aligned to Barnet Council’s 2020-25 Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Domestic Abuse strategies, addressing misogyny, domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
In 2023-24, our #HearMyVoice campaign focused on everyday forms of misogyny that often go unchecked, unnoticed, and unchallenged. Earlier this year Graphic Design students Claire Bath and Fuat Hassan created 'See the Unseen', a project highlighting the problems of misogyny becoming so normalised we sometimes don’t even recognise it for what it is. For young people especially, this exemplary project brings awareness to everyday misogyny and the importance of us all taking a role in supporting positive change. With its striking visuals and messaging, the project is being featured in local bus stops to encourage reporting of unacceptable behaviours. For the students involved, the process of creating See the Unseen was as transformative as the project itself:
“My experience with this project has been very positive and educational. Although I was aware of these acts, it was the low-level acts of misogyny that really opened my eyes. Once I was aware of these actions, I started to notice them more in everyday life, which women have to unfortunately deal with. They should not have to accept these behaviours, which is why we need to bring further awareness to this.”– Fuat Hassan, BA Graphic Design
