This morning, CME CEO Rebecca Tomkinson delivered a keynote speech at the Australian Critical Minerals Conference 2024 in Brisbane, where she outlined the importance of maximising global opportunities in Australia, particularly in relation to the supply and demand of critical minerals.    Australia has many competitive advantages - we have world-class reserves of all the critical minerals the energy transition needs; abundant solar, wind, and gas energy resources; stable government, with low sovereign risk; a reputation as a long-term, reliable trading partner; a skilled workforce; the necessary technology and innovation; and high ESG standards. These advantages have contributed to the development of a number of world-class mining and energy projects across Australia, ranging from iron ore to natural gas, as well as bauxite, gold and nickel. There is huge opportunity for growth, given the demand for critical minerals in front of us. But given the fierce competition we are facing from countries around the world for this investment, we’ll need to be at our best as an industry, but also in terms of the policy environment created by government.

Our colleague, Lilas Roumane, MBA had the privilege of sharing her perspective at BMO Capital Markets' 33rd Global Metals, Mining & Critical Minerals Conference. Here are the key takeaways highlighted by Lilas following her notable participation in this conference:  👉 In response to the criticism and confusion surrounding responsible investment in 2023, we reiterate the importance of ESG integration to reduce risks, optimize portfolio returns, and uphold fiduciary duty.  👉 For us, integrating material ESG issues is crucial to mitigate risks in the mining sector, where establishing a strong social license to operate is critical for project sustainability and long-term value creation.  👉 When analyzing mining issuers, numerous material ESG issues in the mining industry impact long-term value for shareholders: from carbon emissions reduction to water usage, as well as addressing social issues such as human resource management, relations with local communities, and indigenous peoples' rights.  👉 Lastly, the importance of traceability was highlighted through discussions on the new European regulatory mechanism, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), aiming to subject imported products to a carbon pricing equivalent to that applied to European manufacturers. In conclusion, the mining industry plays a key role in the energy transition.
