Today is a good day for innovation. In this picture you see the finalists of the EU Inventor Award ceremony that took place today. Even though I did not invent anything myself (ever), I feel so proud! I look at this picture and I see great minds. I see women well represented. Yes!!! I see inventors, with different backgrounds and from all ages. They have in common their desire to improve something. To fix a problem. To not just think out of the box, but to create a whole new box altogether. Or something completely different from a box. Well, you get my point😉 These inventors got their well-deserved ‘moment of fame’ on the stage today. But ultimately, the most amazing part is not about today. It is about the tireless effort they put in their R&D work, day in day out, for weeks, months, years, without anyone ever watching or without any audience cheering them on. Without knowing whether their efforts will ever lead to success. But they have to keep going, because to them that is simply the only way forward. Their big scale dreams are not seldom the result of countless, perhaps boring, repetitive or small-scale steps. They have to keep going and keep trying. This attitude, mixed with a little craziness and loads of passion, must be their secret recipe. Patentable and all. In short: it is about the hard work that they are willing to do when nobody’s watching. It is this part that we celebrate today. A special congratulations to Dame Carol Vivien Robinson, whose work in mass spectrometry has significantly advanced biochemical research and medical diagnostics, reason why she was presented today with the Lifetime Achievement Award. And, of course, also a special mention for Rochelle Niemeijer, a 29-year-old Dutch scientist, who won the 1st prize in the category Young Inventors Prize for her portable AI-driven chemistry kit, which can quickly identify bacteria, allowing for (much) faster and more accurate medical treatment decisions. "Inv." membership-International Federation of Inventors’ Associations-2020 Inv members means, A group of inventors who hold the title of Inv. Assignment of title to the inventors. Doctors and Ph.D. holders in all countries use Dr as a Title. Engineers in some countries use Eng as a Title. Such a title helps to differentiate qualified and competent professionals from the rest. On the other hand, there is no system that recognizes genuine inventors and innovators, contributing significantly to the knowledge economy and adding to the public stock of knowledge. It was proposed to institutionalize an arrangement whereby the innovators are recognized with the title based on their competency and track record as a member of the Chartered Innovators Council. It was approved to use the title “Inv” for inventors and innovators. A proliferation of questionable publications may enhance an individual's profile, but it does not contribute meaningfully to the advancement of science. Many research papers and patents can be likened to elaborate notes or decorative artwork that, in essence, offer no tangible benefits to investors or companies seeking economic returns. Historically, transformative innovations arise from pioneering ideas rather than merely from bookish knowledge. Each year, more than 10 million papers are added to an extensive digital archive of publications, reflecting an annual increase of 8-10%. In comparison, patent registrations exhibit a more modest growth rate of only 2%. While many individuals aspire to become inventors, patents hold significantly greater value for organizations than research papers do. Today we celebrate NAI Fellow Dr. Karen Lozano, Julia Beecherl Endowed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. An inventor with expertise in polymer composites and nanofiber systems, Dr. Lozano and her team introduced Forcespinning®, an alternative method for producing nanofibers from a variety of materials. What inspires her to be an inventor? "Needs, have had so many that knowing I can solve some fuels my drive to keep going. 🌍✨Our "#freezedrying" time machine leaves the Inca Empire and lands in 1890s Germany 🇩🇪, where we meet a visionary who revolutionized preservation technology - Richard Altmann. 🌟Altmann, a brilliant German pathologist and biochemist, pioneered a revolutionary technique: freezing biological materials and removing moisture through sublimation. This process allowed him to preserve the structure and biological properties of tissues—a concept that laid the foundation for modern freeze-drying. 🔬In 1905, he achieved a remarkable milestone: successfully freeze-drying serum, demonstrating the technique’s potential for medical applications. Yet, like many trailblazers, his contributions were largely overlooked in his time. It wasn’t until the 1930s that his methods were rediscovered and refined, and by World War II, freeze-drying had become indispensable. It saved countless lives by preserving blood plasma and medical supplies for soldiers on the battlefield, while also becoming a cornerstone of food preservation.
