Thermochemical energy storage is an excellent way of capturing industrial #wasteheat. Scientists at Technische Universität Wien have developed a fully reversible, highly efficient #thermochemical energy storage technology with high cycle stability. In this system, two #microfluidic channel networks allow the controlled storage and release of the collected thermal energy. Compared to existing systems, the microfluidic approach offers a significantly higher ratio of energy storage to volume. Thanks to their modular design, the #microreactors can be easily adapted to an existing infrastructure and scaled to the respective requirements. The high storage density and arbitrary scalability of the presented thermochemical energy storage system make this microfluidic #thermochemical energy reactor a promising solution for industrial applications. This week’s #ChemSciPicks is a fantastic Edge article from Daniel Balzer and Ivan Kassal, (University of Sydney), titled: ‘Delocalisation enables efficient charge generation in organic photovoltaics, even with little to no energetic offset’. In this manuscript, Daniel Balzer and Ivan Kassal extend delocalised kinetic Monte Carlo (dKMC) to develop a three-dimensional model of charge generation that includes disorder, delocalisation, and polaron formation in every step from photoexcitation to charge separation. The simulations show that delocalisation dramatically increases charge-generation efficiency, partly by enabling excitons to dissociate in the bulk. Therefore, charge generation can be efficient even in devices with little to no energetic offset, including neat materials. The findings demonstrate that the underlying quantum-mechanical effect that improves the charge-separation kinetics is faster and longer-distance hops between delocalised states, mediated by hybridised states of exciton and charge-transfer character. 🌿 Magnoric part of new network to build first realistic thermomagnetic generator for waste heat recovery ✨ On January 30 and 31, 2024, Magnoric joined HEAT4ENERGY in an extraordinary adventure dedicated to the development of #thermomagnetic devices and new materials to recover heat from data centers, the food, pulp and paper industries and convert this waste heat into electricity. This project fits in with Magnoric's DNA: #energy transition, #decarbonization, low- and high-power devices for converting #residual heat into electricity, #energy storage, finding alternatives for critical raw materials, developing new materials. We are delighted to be part of a new generation of European experts. Metasurface Energy Harvesters (MEHs): a prominent enabler of highly efficient RF energy harvesters. Their constituting metamaterials can enable highly efficient energy harvesters, by optimizing the current distribution over the entire metasurface to create a matched impedance network with respect to the environmental impedance. In the recent paper put down with Alireza Ghaneizadeh, Ph.D., Prof. Mojtaba Joodaki, and my PhD student Panagiotis Gavriilidis, we delve into the fundamentals of the MEH technology, providing a comprehensive overview of their working principle, unit cell designs and prototypes over various frequency bands, as well as state-of-the-art modes of operation. We also study the interplay between Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) and MEHs aiming for energy sustainable RISs powered by metasurface-based RF energy harvesting. We present a novel hybrid unit cell design capable of simultaneous energy harvesting and 1-bit tunable reflection whose dual-functional response is validated via full-wave simulations. We also conduct a comparative collection of real-world measurements for ambient RF power levels and power consumption budgets of reflective RISs to unveil the potential for a self-sustainable RIS via ambient RF energy harvesting.
