I love it when my opinions are validated by independent data. The Institute of Financial Operations & Leadership recently published a white paper on Accounts Payable Automation Trends 2024. When Accounts Payable professionals were asked what would be their top reasons for automating AP processes, 71.4% of the respondents said it would speed up the payables process, 60% said it would increase controls and reduce risk, 37.1% said it would increase visibility across the invoicing process, and a resounding 88.6% said it would free them up to focus on more strategic initiatives. And yet, as per the same report, 79% of AP teams are still only partially automated or completely manual, and only 7% are using AI in spend management processes. This is what I have been talking about. Automation and AI remain underutilised in the back office and businesses need to rectify this error ASAP. (… Stop the Back-End Bleed, Link in Comments) Some more key insights from the report: - The top 3 issues resulting from delayed AP processes: ○ Stress on the AP team – 64.3% ○ Damaged vendor/supplier relationships – 41.4% ○ Delayed delivery of goods/services from vendor/supplier – 38.6% - The top 3 AP process challenges according to respondents were: ○ Manual data entry – 51.4% ○ Invoice exception handling delays – 48.6% ○ Delays due to data errors and discrepancies – 47.1% My takeaway? Automation is on the rise, but we are yet to scratch the surface. Take AI adoption for instance. While there has been an acceleration in the usage of intelligent technologies for invoice management over the past three, barriers to AI adoption still remain high. This needs to change. AP is an extremely information intensive process and our teams are drowning under the burden of tedious manual work. Full automation is the only way to reduce human errors and achieve efficiency gains. Incidentally, this holds true for other back-end functions too. I believe full automation and AI in the back office is crucial for building resilience and a stronger bottom line. AP professionals and other backend office warriors, I would love to get your viewpoint on this. "My experience with one of India's largest telecom companies in Africa revealed that their biggest accounts payable hurdle was their own internal process. Despite the company's willingness to pay, vendors faced significant payment issues due to the lengthy and complex process, involving multiple channels and documentation requirements. A similar issue arises in everyday scenarios, such as when opening a bank account. Even with all the necessary information, filling out forms can be a daunting task. Wouldn't it be more efficient if the bank executive filled out the form themselves? This highlights the importance of streamlining processes and supporting vendors. Simplifying processes and providing support to vendors is crucial. I successfully implemented a solution to reduce payable outstanding by streamlining the process. This approach can benefit large firms, which often struggle with increasingly stringent compliance and verification requirements. Timely payment to vendors after service or supply is essential. By supporting vendors and simplifying processes, companies can overcome payment challenges and improve relationships with their partners." Thanks and Regards
Well said Saurav. When the suppliers are happy and Comfortable, organisation gets much benefitted
Dear Saurav, I completely agree that automation and the use of AI will revolutionize and enhance efficiency and productivity in various fields, including accounts payable, backend operations, and many other diverse areas. However, it is crucial to place a strong emphasis on educating people about the utility of AI. Additionally, successful individuals who have consistently achieved success in AI implementation should effectively demonstrate and showcase their achievements to inspire and encourage others to follow suit. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Saurav Wadhwa , well explained, long list of reconciliations, reminding chainmails which has no access/ link to the base accounting system but having information to resolve the issue and process the invoice if tackled with technology, would help to improvise, Thanks for sharing
