Inclusion in the film industry is vital because of the significant influence it holds over public perception and societal norms. By normalising the casting of disabled individuals in diverse roles and ensuring accessibility on set, we can amplify their voices and work toward creating an equitable space in the industry—one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute. To understand more about what the industry is doing to solve the problem of accessibility for the disabled community on set, check out the #cinematographyworld website here https://lnkd.in/eKHe5ksE to read the interview and article. For too long, steep fees and complex permit systems have made capturing the beauty of our national parks a challenge, especially for independent creators and small production teams. This new legislation simplifies access to these breathtaking landscapes, reducing the financial and logistical barriers that have kept many creatives out. It’s a major step forward for an industry that thrives on storytelling and visual inspiration from the world’s most stunning locations. It’s more than just easier access—it’s an open invitation to reimagine how we share the beauty of these public spaces with the world. Indie filmmakers, content creators, and small production teams now have an opportunity to tell authentic stories without being priced out or held back by red tape. #Photography #Filmmaking #NationalParks #Creativity #ElviraMedia

After years of advocating (and I'll share what that means below) for women shooters / cinematographers / videographers to be hired by large organisations in Tasmania - I just found out that I have had an influence. ⚡ This has made my day. I am a huge believer in women supporting other women, especially in the tough media landscape which has been so heavily dominated by men for so long. So what does that mean? For me, recently, it means: * Leaving a comfortable job at the ABC to work on an all female team to create a project showcasing inspiring women's stories through documentary called Women of the Island. * It means providing opportunities for emerging female filmmakers through that project thanks to multiple grants and the wonderful work of the leadership at Wide Angle, AFTRS, Ten Days on the Island and Festivals Australia. * It means filling up theatres in sold out events across the state to celebrate the achievements, the lives and the challenges of over 30 women to become the headline event of Ten Days on the Island in 2021. Proving that women filmmakers can shoot and create highend films that people LOVE. * It means taking this popular content to places like Brand Tasmania and Tourism Tasmania and offering it to them, only for them to say "no thanks". * It means pointing out that women have stories as well - and historically men find men really interesting and rarely feel the same about women's stories, which leads to men telling stories mainly about other men. * It means pointing out that history has a way of erasing women's stories and that we could all do with addressing that. * It means pointing out that since the beginning of TV in Tasmania, every frame shot by Tourism, Brand Tas, the news and advertising has been shot by a man. There are a couple of exceptions, with a few stories being filmed for ABC by a woman in the 60s-80s, and a couple of ads being shot by a female cinematographer from Melb. Read that again. Every news bulletin, every ad, every tourism campaign, every gov story, every single thing that shapes the on-air visual culture of a place for over 50 years...(that changed in 2017 when a female joined a commercial channel to shoot news) * It means working with the legends at the Australian Cinematographers Society to put on an event highlighting the females who shoot - Women Behind the Lens - in an attempt to raise the profiles of women who shoot to those that could employ us! * It means making a list of those same women and sending it to every broadcaster, every gov org and to anyone else I could think of - because it's not good enough that no female lens has been hired by government / tourism agencies in this state. * It also means mainly hearing nothing in response, from the female shooters or from industry. * Which of course means...I give up. - But yesterday I was told that a female camera woman was hired - because of this work (and of course hers). I did make a difference. Small, but also history making.

You can't tell a good story without good visuals and compelling natural sound. As a reporter that started out as a photographer, I've been able to tell people-centered stories that couldn't have been accomplished without meaningful visuals and audio. Here's a look back at a photojournalism reel I put together earlier this year that landed 1st place in the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters College competition recently. Of course, I didn't learn all this by myself. Through my educational experience, some of the best mentors in the business have coached me and helped me break some really bad habits — Don Schoenfeld, Terry Heifetz, Tim Underhill Some of the things I've learned from them: -Anticipation, anticipation...be one step ahead of the action and keep an eye on what your subject will do next. Doesn't hurt to ask either. -What can I capture that is making sound? Sound drives attention. -It’s not what you hear, it’s how you hear it...capture the ears, capture the eyes. -Where can I fit my camera/GoPro to get a unique perspective? -When doing standups, put some movement into it and interact with your environment. -Always have a spare SD card handy... I've still got a lot of learning to do, but I'm always excited to learn something new every day. #StayHungry #Photojournalism #Storytelling
