📚 LAST CHANCE TO RSVP - FREE Reading Group: 'Sexuality and Power in the Ancient World' with Yentl Love (@queerclassicist)!! ✨ This reading group will aim to discuss how Queer Theory has enabled a radical re-evaluation of the LGBTQIA+ community alongside other minority groups, through both the study and teaching of Ancient World History. This course will first introduce participants to the main concepts of Queer Theory, in particular the central contradictory approaches of Constructivism vs Essentialism, and Queer Theory’s discussions of the societal power imbalance. Subsequently, this will be applied to the Ancient World, taking the participants through diverse historical objects and literature, from Ancient Egypt tombs, to Ancient Greek pottery, and Near Eastern texts. Each session will focus on a specific aspect of Queerness found in the Ancient World, and will be discussed alongside diverse and potentially contradictory modern scholarship, ancient artefacts and literature, and supporting aspects of Queer Theory. Participants will approach key ancient artefacts, including sculpture, pottery, reliefs, and tombs, alongside ancient literature, and see how an original scholarly interpretation has been developed through employing alternative consideration from a Queer Theoretical perspective. 🗓 Mondays @ 11 am EST, June 17th - July 15th ➡️ RSVP REQUIRED: https://lnkd.in/gDRUyFnf 💕 SASA Summer 2024 Reading Groups are a generous grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. #Education #Archaeology #Educational #EducationMatters #EducationForAll #ClassicalStudies #School #Knowledge #Learning #Historic #KnowledgeIsPower #Teaching #Archeology #CareerDevelopment #Resources #Archaeologist #AncientCivilization #AncientHistory #AncientWorld #History #FYP #RomanEmpire #Egypt #AncientEgypt #ClassicalStudies #Rome #AncientGreece #QueerTheory #LGBTQIA #Queer

Ita Mac Carthy (IMEMS Director), Professor of Early Modern Italian literature & art at our School of Modern Languages & Cultures, recently participated in an Ideas Forum as part of 'UP North Culture + Knowledge: Growing Opportunities in the North East’. She discussed how Research Institutes like IMEMS could shape a better future for the North East of England. Introducing the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS): A hub for interdisciplinary study spanning archaeology, history, linguistics, and more, aiming to understand human history from Late Antiquity to the late 18th century. IMEMS emphasizes global past research, leveraging resources like Durham Cathedral & Castle. Notably, 'Team Pigment' explores medieval manuscript pigments, revealing fascinating insights into our shared heritage. IMEMS's "Inventing Futures" initiative focuses on using past knowledge to tackle 21st-century challenges. For instance, a collaborative project on "Violence Against Women" delves into literature and art to understand societal attitudes and inform present responses. Today is International Women’s Day! In the coming week, we’ll be showcasing women who have inspired and deeply influenced our worldview. Each of them is an edge-walker and pioneer in their field, who deeply challenged the status quo and entrenched gender norms. First up is Marija Gimbutas, her work is deeply relevant today, pointing at the history of matristic civilizations that lived without war, in honour of Earth-the ultimate god. Gender Historian Rasa Navickaitė writes about Gimbutas: “Marija Gimbutas made an impressive scholarly career and achieved fame beyond academia. However, in the last decades of her life, Gimbutas’ scholarly authority was subject to much debate. Gimbutas’ work on the civilization of Old Europe, starting with her monograph The Gods and Goddesses in 1974, was puzzling to many of her archaeologist colleagues, as it did not seem to follow the established norms of the discipline. In “The Gods and Goddesses” and her later works, Gimbutas told a coherent story about the social and spiritual structure of prehistoric Old Europe as a matristic, peaceful, and egalitarian civilization. Her ideas were very much the contrary of the androcentric narratives of (pre)history pervasive in archaeology at the time. The ideas about the prehistoric Goddess religion faced a strong backlash from the academic establishment, argued the feminist theologian Carol P. Christ, because they posed a dangerous threat to the underlying logic of “patriarchal Western hegemony.” Find out more in the carousel below 👇 and discover resources, such as documentary and articles on our website https://lnkd.in/dnat8tYF #internationalwomensday #ecology #marijagimbutas #pioneer #matriarchy #archeology

📚 LAST CHANCE TO RSVP - FREE Reading Group: ‘Imperial Encounters: Material Culture under Roman Rule in Egypt’ with Louise O'Brien!! ✨ The introduction of Roman rule to Egypt in 30 BC brought about a transition from a dynastic monarchy, to a province of the expanding Roman empire, resulting in interplay between both imperial power and native Egyptian culture. Focusing on this transformative period, we will explore the values and importance of material culture as primary evidence, including the Fayum mummy portrait panels, hybrid tomb decoration, and changing temple adornments and architecture. We will analyse the cultural encounters between Rome and Egypt, understanding how Roman rule influenced the life of those living and working in Egypt during this period, including religious practices, elite strategy, and artistic expression in life and death. Key topics will include the continuity of Hellenistic influences during this period, despite Egypt's status as a Roman province, the rise of syncretic deities such as Serapis, the assimilation of imperial cult with native Egyptian culture, and the appropriation and manipulation of classical culture by native elites. Critical analysis of primary sources and archaeological evidence will allow us to understand the complex dynamics of cultural exchange that occurred during this period, and will shed light on how Roman rule affected the identities and experiences of Egypt as a result. 🗓 Saturdays @ 11 am EST, June 15th - July 13th ➡️ RSVP REQUIRED: https://lnkd.in/gxSJ4huX 💕 SASA Summer 2024 Reading Groups are a generous grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. #Education #Archaeology #Educational #EducationMatters #EducationForAll #ClassicalStudies #School #Knowledge #Learning #Historic #KnowledgeIsPower #Teaching #Archeology #CareerDevelopment #Resources #Archaeologist #AncientCivilization #AncientHistory #AncientWorld #History #FYP #RomanEmpire #Egypt #AncientEgypt #ClassicalStudies #Rome #AncientGreece #RomanEgypt #Cleopatra #Caesar
