I suspect there are a half million things to do, all at a quarter to three in New York City. While there may not be that many things to do in each village, town, or city in the rest of our state, luck is not needed to find a quality of things to enjoy during a visit, even 148 miles north in our state capital, whether you order a AAA TripTik, query your favorite internet search engine, click on Yelp or Tripadvisor, or ask Copilot. One of my favorite activities is the free Canalway Challenge program. The Canalway Challenge has offered me an annual goal-oriented recreation opportunity that explores our state’s unique history, culture, and geography. The website has all you need to plan your challenge from May 1 to October 1, whether you choose 15, 45, 90, 180, or 360 miles or the first-mile challenge for individuals with a disability. The tools include maps, itineraries, events, festivals, a Facebook group, and an online log to track progress. Four program map regions include: (1) Buffalo to Rochester, (2) Rochester to Syracuse, (3) Syracuse to Little Falls, and (4) Little Falls to Albany. The category references include local/regional food and beverages, historic sites and museums, parks and nature, canal structures, and communities. There are suggested cycling day trips and kid-friendly ride itineraries that build out unique experiences in each segment. There are also paddling trips to get on the water for a few hours or a full day. An example includes the Hudson-Mohawk Sample (Albany) where you can head to the water and discover how two mighty rivers shaped a region and opened a nation. This three-day trip includes New York’s second largest waterfall and a closeup look at the engineering genius that unlocked waterway travel. Along the way, soak up the Capital Region’s culture, natural beauty, rich history, and recreation, then sample from a growing craft beverage scene. The NYS Canal Corp/NYPA partners with local providers to offer free excursions across the Canal Corridor. Check out their website to view and register for events ranging from kayaking, biking and boating to birding and painting. #CanalwayChallenge #ILoveNY
