One of the main things that made me leave BigLaw after just a year was realizing that even the "tech" firms were not using tech. I graduated law school in 2019. The world was just in the ramp-up to the 2021 bubble and the market was humming. I got to work on some amazing deals: - Robinhood's Series F and Series G - Amazon buying a driverless car company - Stripe buying a Nigerian payments company I was in the heart of Silicon Valley working with some of the world's most impactful companies. Sounds incredible. Right? Then why was I still filling out signature packets at 2am? And spending 80 hours drafting diligence memos? And re-drafting the same contracts over and over again? And why was the firm making only nominal efforts to change any of that? In retrospect, looking back I realize I was at the tail end of a long era of non-tech-use by law firms. But at the time it felt like it would go on forever. A few years later, the firm got tools to automate the closing process. Then the drafting process. Now they're trying all sorts of AI tools. I now have the privilege of witnessing this shift from the outside perspective. And it is incredibly satisfying to see. Even if I'll never get to use any of it myself.
