#StoryFromTheField: Until four years ago, Pak Prapto was a teacher. He had been teaching since he was 19 years old. When retirement came, he didn’t know what to do - he felt he had to do something to spend his days. That’s how he came to be a farmer! We love hearing stories like this, where people become farmers, growing food for the world. We need more people, especially young ones, to get into farming. That’s why it’s more important than ever to ensure that agriculture is making farmers prosper and that farming is a promising occupation! At Jiva, we are working with the rural communities to help farmers get high-quality inputs, free agronomy advisory, and access to markets to empower them and help them improve their livelihoods. As part of our ongoing work on training farmers in Good Agronomic Practices (GAP), we identified a crucial need for better access to improved cassava stem varieties. To address this, in partnership with PIND Foundation alongside other organisations, we are hosting a 2-day engagement workshop for cassava seed entrepreneurs, bringing together farmers from across the Niger Delta region. This initiative aims to boost the multiplication and certification of commercial-grade cassava seeds, empowering local farmers with the tools for more sustainable agriculture. Agriculture provides the highest potential to create employment and offers most of the informal jobs for the rural youth. However, this potential is untapped because most of the farmers are smallholders and practice subsistence farming, which makes the youth see agriculture as an unattractive and dirty venture or business to participate in. Lliffton in partnership with Practical Action in Kenya under the RAY project funded by MasterCard Foundation is working to change this narrative among the youths in agriculture. #agribusiness #youthinagriculture

Historically, Malawian smallholder farmers have faced barriers to accessing and utilizing agricultural mechanization, hindering crop productivity and overall livelihood. To help provide solutions, we are excited to support the implementation of the Malawi Entrepreneur Agricultural Mechanization initiative, which launched last week in Lilongwe. This initiative supplies seed capital to purchase 23 tractors and other agricultural equipment on loan to local entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs will provide farmers access to services including land tilling, lime application and shelling of farm produce. The project’s circular loan structure reinvests principal repayments in acquiring additional machinery for future beneficiaries, thereby supporting a continuous growth cycle for local businesses. Aligned with our Company’s purpose – to transform people’s lives so that together we can grow a better world – this initiative promotes sustainable crop production practices, empowers Malawian farmers and fosters economic growth in the region. #sustainableagriculture #agmechanization #transforminglives #malawiagriculture
