May is Mental Health Awareness Month and data from a 2023 Student Voice survey shows that, of all the services that students prioritized in their decision of whether or not to enroll at an institution, the majority indicated that mental health services were the most important factor. Our YOU for Students platform helps students with their mental health and well-being upstream of crisis by providing comprehensive content tailored to their needs, helping them take action with skill-building tools and self-checks, and connecting them directly with their campus resources. Transitioning to college is an exciting milestone, but it often comes with challenges—particularly for students managing mental health conditions. Research indicates that up to 77% of college students experience psychological distress, and many decide to take time off or leave college due to mental health symptoms. As a transition specialist, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is for students to start preparing to manage their mental health well before they head to college. That’s why I’m sharing Kelly Burch’s excellent article for The Jed Foundation (JED), Preparing to Manage Mental Health in College, which offers valuable insights for students, parents and professionals. It outlines practical steps students can take during middle and high school to build the skills they need for independence in college. Key takeaways: - Encourage students to learn as much as they can about their diagnosis and explore resource options. - Help them practice managing medications and scheduling health appointments—and think through how they will continue to manage these responsibilities in college. - Guide them in planning how they’d like to share—or not share—their mental health story with others. - Collaborate on creating an emergency plan and teach them to identify mental health red flags. These proactive steps can empower students to thrive in college, not just academically but holistically. As Kelly aptly notes, mental health is health, and helping students develop self-management skills can have a profound impact on their overall well-being. I’m beyond excited to share that my scoping review, “Prosocial Behavior Interventions Implemented Among Undergraduate Student Populations,” has officially been published! The objective of this review was to assess what is known from the literature about the impact of prosocial behavior interventions on the mental health and overall well-being of undergraduate students. With mental health being a significant concern in higher education, this review highlights the potential of prosocial behaviors—such as helping, sharing, donating, cooperating, caring, kindness, and providing comfort—as powerful tools for improving student well-being. I’m incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of Dr. Katie Shillington throughout this process. Her guidance has been invaluable! Looking forward to continuing to contribute to the conversation around mental health and well-being. If you’re interested in student mental health, well-being, or prosocial behavior interventions, I’d love for you to check it out!
