How durable is ECOMET Corundum zinc flake coating? Zinc- and/or aluminium flake coatings obtain very good protection against corrosion, 1000 – 6500 hrs in neutral salt spray test, depending on composition and coating thickness - it takes about 400 hours to etch the coating 1 µm. The layer has to be 6 microns onwards; built by 2 times dip spin process. Prediction for ECOMET Corundum corrosion rate per annum is 0.02-0.03 microns per annum as per Naquist Spectra and Bode Plot test method. The corrosion rate can be also calculated in MMY, means Millimeter per year. In an open water system a corrosion rate of around 1 MPY is normal. Having corrosion rate of around 10, you should take action. Corrosion rates of 20 MPY and above, you should be concerned, as the corrosion is “eating“ the metal rather fast.
