Oxford Semantic Technologies, a company created by three Department of Computer Science professors has been bought by Samsung Electronics. Established in 2017 by Professors Ian Horrocks, Boris Motik and Bernardo Cuenca Grau, the company's knowledge graph and reasoning technology merges complex data from multiple sources, enabling accurate knowledge and insights, in a similar way that humans acquire, remember and reason using knowledge. Its software, RDFox®, will be integrated into Samsung’s AI devices, advancing its technology and enhancing user experience.  The company has been backed by Samsung Ventures since 2018, alongside Oxford Science Enterprises and Oxford University Innovation. ‘We are delighted to be working with Samsung,’ said Peter Crocker, CEO of Oxford Semantic Technologies. ‘By integrating Samsung’s expertise in user experience and data with our advanced knowledge graph and reasoning technology, we will provide Samsung’s customers with even more sophisticated personalisation.’ The research project behind the company's creation featured as one of the department’s Impact Case Studies submitted to the 2021 Research Education Framework (REF), the national body that assesses the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. Enabling Applications of Ontologies via Reasoning Systems was one of five case studies that saw 81% of the department’s research rated as 'world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour' and the remainder as 'internationally excellent'.  Read more: https://lnkd.in/ePNx5Naj

Connectivity between human and AI is crucial for adoption and adaptation of further developments and effectiveness. ____ Objective Functions for Human-Understandable Explainability: A team led by HPI’s Herbrich and Landay from HAI proposes to develop objective, machine-optimizable criteria for predictions and decisions, making them understandable to humans. Design of Social Computing Systems: [...] three of the biggest challenges related to our reliance on social networks and other systems that moderate interactions among individuals and groups of people. How can we assess the quality and bias of such services before they are launched in the real world? How can we identify non-human participants in a social network? How can we design social algorithms that make intelligent trade-offs among values, goals, and objectives? AI-Assisted Human-Human Interaction: In domains like mental health and education, many needs go unmet because of the limited availability of human experts. This team [...] sees an opportunity to develop socially intelligent virtual assistants that can hold conversations and show empathy to form meaningful long-term relationships with their users. AI-Assisted Privacy — Preserving Smart Homes/Offices/Health Spaces: This project, jointly led by Herbrich and Landay, focuses on creating intelligent sensing systems that maintain private information safely, in ways that users will trust. AI-Assisted Fabrication Tools: The scholars recognize that fabrication tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, machine tools, and sewing machines have untapped potential for rapid prototyping, but widespread adoption of these tools is hindered by challenges related to tedious calibration, difficult learnability for humans, incompatibilities with common drawing applications, and lack of automation for material prep, assembling parts, and adjusting machine settings. https://lnkd.in/e-rgz4jm

📢 MIT FutureTech is seeking a Research Assistant to work with Dr. Danial Lashkari on projects related to economics of technological progress, innovation, and artificial intelligence. This is an exciting opportunity to support a rapidly growing lab who work on socially impactful AI and computing research, and rapidly develop cutting-edge skills and experience. Danial studies different long-run drivers of economic change, including technological breakthroughs such as IT and AI, the innovation activity of firms, transformations in the consumption patterns of households, and globalization. Since 2023, he has been with the Research and Statistics Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Led by Dr. Neil Thompson, MIT FutureTech is an interdisciplinary group of computer scientists, engineers, and economists who study trends in computing and Artificial Intelligence. We aim to identify and understand where these trends will create opportunities or risks, and help leaders in computing, scientific funding bodies, and government to respond appropriately. Our research therefore helps to answer important questions including: Will AI progress accelerate or decline – and should it? What are the bottlenecks to growth from AI, and how can they be solved? What are the risks from AI, and how can we mitigate them? To support our research, we run seminars and conferences, to better connect the field of computer scientists, economists and innovation scholars, and build a thriving global research community. To disseminate it, we advise governments, nonprofits and industry, including via National Academies panels on transformational technologies and scientific reliability, the Council on Competitiveness’ National Commission on Innovation and Competitiveness Frontiers, and the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s National Network for Critical Technology Assessment. Our work has been funded by Open Philanthropy, the National Science Foundation (NSF), Microsoft, Accenture, IBM, the MIT-Air Force AI accelerator, and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
