Happy #MicrobiomeDay from the #SeeraveFoundation! On this special day, we celebrate the incredible world of #microbiomes – the diverse communities of microorganisms that play a vital role in our #health, #environment, and #beyond. At the Seerave Foundation, our vision is to enhance human health and wellbeing by understanding and leveraging the complex interactions within our microbiomes. We believe that by exploring these microscopic ecosystems, we can unlock new pathways to better health and sustainable living. To mark this occasion, we're excited to announce the opening of the Microbiomes Exhibition at Musée de la Main in Lausanne, Switzerland. The museum created an extraordinary bio-artistic exhibition on the microbiome and offers a chance to the public to explore a fascinating and little-known world, that of the micro-organisms that surround us. Omnipresent, but invisible, microbes form communities that are essential to the functioning of every ecosystem on our planet. From the soil to the oceans, air, plants, and the human body – this exhibition invites you to discover this vast unknown land that's sure to surprise you. In collaboration with the @NCCR Microbiomes, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to delve into the secrets of these tiny yet mighty organisms. You'll learn how microbes interact with their environments, support life systems, and impact our health and daily lives. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity if you are on Swiss grounds. #MicrobiomeDay #MicrobiomesExhibition #SeeraveFoundation #NCCRMicrobiomes #MuseedelaMain #Lausanne #Microorganisms #ScienceExhibition

We were invited to the round table dicussion by #IUFRO, for gathering thoughts pre congress #IUFRO2024. Honoured to share our thoughts on the future at 2050. Few take-a-ways for ourselves, from key-note speakers: 👧 2050 desicion makers are already born and vocal on their opinions - ask 25 years olds what they think will be in 2050. Young people believe there is need for forest products as timber but also as ecosystem services and biodiversity, to substitute fossils with renewables. 🌎 The forest sector development is driven by the outside and the structural changes of the forest sector are as much human-social isse as an economic-tech one. ⏩ Governments have to be highly adaptable & flexible to respond to rapidly evolving circumstances. Without holistic view for 2050 in forestry, the Scandinavian/Baltic forestry sector shall be doomed ("global south"), as without it there is no resilience, competitiveness nor sustainability. 🔬 R&D and machine learning x remote sensing will takes us to real time greenhouse gas emmission calculation, at the same time rapid urbanization, changes of living conditions, digital nomads and structures of families amongst other things shall change and influence sector. ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative Advances Through Strategic Networking and Collaborations 🌿 👥 The ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative, supported by the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan , is gaining momentum through strategic cross-sectoral collaborations. Through elaborating the Thematic Approach to Transhumance heritage, the project aims to strengthen the capacity in preparing robust nominations of properties illustrative of transhumance heritage to the #WorldHeritage List and facilitate their representation in other relevant international programmes. 🤝 The kick-off discussion on 26 September 2024 gathered feedback from more than 30 archaeologists, ethnologists, anthropologists, agricultural economists, animal scientists, ecologists, planners, environmental biologists, livestock and rangelands, public health and landscape experts from various universities from around the world, as well as from national centres and institutes for scientific research of China, Ghana, France, Peru and Spain, from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Carpathian Convention. This network of professionals and academics, all with extensive experience in transhumance, provided a wealth of insights on material attributes of #TranshumanceHeritage, its values and traditional governance systems. Along with additional expert input, these contributions will shape the Thematic Approach to Transhumance Heritage, which will be the main project outcome in 2025. 👉 Since the launch of the project in July 2024, the ICOMOS team has held a series of constructive meetings with lead international institutions. These discussions have centred on fostering cross-sectoral synergies and identifying partnership opportunities for safeguarding transhumance heritage.

Together, let's prioritize ecology for our shared future 💪🌍 🗞️ In a #tribune published today in @LesEchos, 300 stakeholders from the world of impact and economics, brought together at the initiative of @ChangeNOW, call for overcoming divisions and positioning ecology and planetary boundaries as fundamental principles upon which society must build and organize itself, for a sustainable future. In a world that pushes us to polarize, to divide, threatening the very existence of our democracies, two elements unite us all: ecology and humanity. Ecology, as the science of our common home, because it defines, like a physical law, the framework in which we live. Humanity, because it defines, like a moral law, what we all are. It is time to consider ecology not as a constraint, but as the foundation of our common future. The National Science Challenges were set up to research the biggest challenges Aotearoa had. Ten years on they are wrapping up, join myself and others at the BioHeritage Crazy Ambitious Conference 4 whether that be in person or online. Why I value NZ's unique biological heritage is so important is because we were one of the last countries discovered meaning nature existed and thrived on its own for so many years prior. We have a truly unique ecosystem yet there are significant threats long-term and imminently that should and can be addressed. Sign up details below, for those in the public sector it's tight times ahead however development shouldn't be completely off the table. https://lnkd.in/d6xMwiZM

We live in an age of data explosion. This also applies to biodiversity data. But beyond the loads of data we already have, it's important to find out what we don't know. AI technologies and Digital Twin platforms offer new ways of combining the data, models and interaction processes needed to predict dynamic change and provide solutions to biodiversity challenges. I had the interesting experience of helping to organise a discussion in Brussels last week to open up these developments. Here is a short overview: https://lnkd.in/dwKrzztM #sustainability #digitaltwins #biodiversity #bigdata
Digital twins in biodiversity offer great yet untapped potential for both scientists and policy makers. What kind of contribution can AI provide to halting the loss of biodiversity? This was the central question discussed at the seminar “Towards a Digital Twin for Biodiversity” on 8 February 📅 in Brussels, jointly organised by the University of Tartu, Estonia, and the ETAG - Estonian Research Council. The team of the University of Tartu (Rector Toomas Asser, Vice Rector for Research Mari Moora, Director of Natural History Museum and Botanical Gardens Urmas Köljalg) is thankful 🙏 for the inspiring presentations and discussions held by Signe Ratso (Deputy Director at Directorate General for Research & Innovation), Robert Konrad (Adviser for Biodiversity at Directorate General for Environment) Erik Kristiansson (Professor in biostatistics and bioinformatics at Chalmers University of Technology), Dimitris Koureas, (Managing Director for Digital & Chief Information Officer, Naturalis Center for Biodiversity), Jesse Harrison (Manager for Horizon Europe BioDT pilot). Today, we’re making mud-cakes! 🧁 Just a stone’s throw from the famous Vista Alegre factory, the marshes and intertidal zones 🌊 of the Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) are teeming with life. It’s in these biodiversity-rich areas that our lab located at the Universidade de Aveiro, regularly collect muddy sediment samples to better understand microphytobenthos 🔬 🌿 , a biofilm mainly composed of photosynthetic microorganisms, especially diatoms, that play essential roles in maintaining the health and resilience of benthic ecosystems. These samples are currently being used in the SEARCHLIGHT project (funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)), which focuses on studying the motility of benthic pennate diatoms in response to light, a unique trait among diatoms that allow them to optimize their photosynthetic efficiency and might explain their fast diversification and evolutionary success. What about the mud-cakes? 🧁 The freshly collected and homogenized mud is transferred into well plates using a syringe, thus creating our mud-cakes for the day! After the biofilm reconstruction, these samples will be used to study the mechanisms linking light detection to the activation of diatom motility. Curious to know more? Stay tuned and follow our progress!
