Since I’m often asked about DynamoDB updates as an SME, I wanted to share my thoughts on the recent pricing changes for on-demand throughput and Global Tables. First off, this change is now available in GovCloud and ADC regions, which is a huge win for public sector and compliance-focused workloads! Secondly, this is a game changer. The mental model for DynamoDB just shifted. Previously, the guidance was to start with on-demand, observe your usage, and then consider switching to provisioned capacity for cost efficiency. Now, with these updates, it’s going to be hard to beat on-demand pricing unless your usage is fully utilized at very high throughput levels. For most customers, this means simpler capacity planning and the ability to just pick on-demand without worrying about constant adjustments. Of course, customers with predictable, high throughput can still benefit from provisioned capacity, but this update makes DynamoDB even easier to use for the majority of workloads. I’m excited to see how this change enables customers to focus more on building great applications and less on capacity management. What are your thoughts? When you need to have a database in your application on AWS one simple approach that doesn’t involve spinning up servers or anything else is using DynamoDB. DynamoDB is a truly serverless key/value store that you can create a table with and be able to start using it all in a number of seconds. DynamoDB is highly scalable and provides high performance at almost any scale. When using a DynamoDB table to store data for users in different tenants or where some of the data should only be accessible by some users, you can using granular access control on rows and the “LeadingKeys” construct.
