What does fall smell like? 🤔 As summer starts to give way to fall, there are tons of opportunities for brands to step into the spotlight and do their thing in their respective categories . That often means orange and brown visuals and pumpkin imagery but for many brands, the ‘smell’ of Fall is an even more important opportunity —yet less easy to pin down. Smell is is the ONLY sense that has a main line to the parts of the brain that process emotions and create memories. They influence our mood, motivation, and behavior and they are big business for brands. Scented candles are a $4 billion market and growing. Overall interest is booming because of everyone’s interest in wellness, ambiance and aesthetics being amplified by social media showing us the lifestyle accessories we 'need' to have. every sweater season, scented candlemaker brands compete fiercely on innovation and nostalgia and it's not enough for their candles to simply have "Apple" or "Pumpkin spice" to sell. Brands in this space have to explore new complexities of scents and drop seasonal lines like they are in food or fashion to attract noses. The Yankee Candle Company, Inc. recently dropped their new fall 2024 line which has scents ranging from Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl to Campfire Cocktail, and Afternoon Scrapbooking. I don’t know what Scrapbooking smells like but anyone who has been to a Michaels Stores knows that this is one of the exact groups who will spend $40 on a candle.
