Will Your Classroom Get Enough ‘Likes’? Teachers Feel the Social Media Pressure https://ow.ly/oqlc50UiGPz Based on research from the EdWeek Research Center, the article starts with this summary: “In the last two years, nearly a third of teachers say they have felt pressured to portray a certain image on social media when it comes to their teaching approaches, popularity with students, classroom decorations, or how they dress, according to a nationally representative online survey conducted this fall by the EdWeek Research Center.” Teacher’s ‘social media’ performance is something I have not thought much about, but this article in @Edweek (LIV SEE IF YOU CAN FIND THEIR USERNAME TO USE) has me thinking. If #teachers need to be concerned with their online profile, what does that say about their ability to push #innovative ways to teach if they are distracted by the need to ‘perform’ for #parents and their community vs. facilitating the #learning of their #students?

The EdWeek State of Teaching survey, which polled a nationally representative sample of nearly 1,500 teachers in October 2023, found that teachers with three to nine years of classroom experience have worse morale than their peers who have either more or less experience. They are also less likely than teachers in other stages of their careers to say they’d recommend their own children, or those of a loved one, pursue a career in teaching. Why is this, and what can we do about it? Find out: https://vist.ly/zvxn #Education #Teaching

How can you deepen student engagement, enhance intrinsic motivation, increase real-world application and improve wellbeing? Give students greater agency! I started implementing a few shifts last year in my DP Psychology classes and the results surprised me. Not only did the students reap all of the above benefits, but they did so while maintaining strong exam results. You can hear more in this podcast episode in which Kyle Wagner interviews me about implementing Agentic shifts within a prescribed, exam-based curriculum.
Student-Centered Learning Experiences + Environments [Co] Designer, PBL expert/coach, #1 PBL Podcast Host, Author, 12 SHIFTS Creator. Helping educators transform to student-centered environments through 12 shifts.
If I had a nickel for every time a secondary teacher asked... How do I develop a student-centered secondary classroom with a prescribed curriculum, strict assessment guidelines, and an exam oriented culture?!?! I would be a very rich man... But I totally get it. Creating an agentic classroom is harder to achieve with these constraints. But what if you made a few minor shifts where you and your students DID have agency? What difference would that have on student motivation and engagement? That's exactly what DP Psychology Teacher Gisou Ravan (Ravanbaksh) did by letting students research, design experiments, and exhibit their findings in their own student-led brain museum. And guess what?! She didn't sacrifice any of her mandated curriculum. In fact, students showed deeper understanding, engagement and even exam results. Learn more about her inspirational story and how you too can build an agentic classroom given the same restraints: Listen on the Website: https://lnkd.in/gvtp7q8v Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gE8yQkv6 Listen on Apple: https://lnkd.in/gWHHVTTK #schoolleadership #educationalleadership #projectbasedlearning #studentagency #12shifts Andrew Morrissey David Nguyen Fred Schafer Aaron James Guthrie King Alison Ya-Wen Yang John Turner Matt Seddon

Academic success is about more than mastering content—it’s about creating the supportive environment that you would've wanted as a student. Here are 3 strategies to help students struggling in their coursework: Monitor Academic Performance: Use tracking tools to identify students who may need extra support and encourage them to use campus resources like tutoring. Regular Check-ins: Simple surveys and extra credit incentives for attending office hours can keep students engaged and help manage their stress levels. Foster a Sense of Belonging: Encouraging participation in campus activities and hosting informal “Meet the Faculty” events can build a community where students feel more comfortable seeking help. By implementing these approaches, educators can start making a meaningful impact on student performance and well-being. #HigherEducation #StudentSupport #AcademicSuccess

💡Want to know how to best support and serve students? Ask them and they’ll tell you!!🌟 Portland Public Schools and our integral alternative school partners are dedicated to centering the voices of our students. Over the past 5 years, we have focused on gathering feedback from students during countless interviews and visits across our alternative school network. These four priorities consistently rise to the top: 🎯 Personalization: Students want their learning experiences to integrate their specific interests & skills. They also want to be able to demonstrate their knowledge and growth in various ways. 👥 Relationships: Students appreciate the time to build connection and trust amongst school community members. This time is crucial to their well being, their sense of belonging and supports their progress in school! 📣 Empowerment: Students want to feel emboldened to express their needs, make decisions about their learning, and help inform their educational paths. 🔃 Flexibility: Students need flexible scheduling options and varied types of learning environments. So get out and ask students, “What is working, and what’s not?” Then heed their advice! It’s imperative, if we want to create inclusive and responsive environments that inspire ALL of our learners. Stay tuned for updates as we continue this important journey! <This is repost with edits> #StudentVoice #StudentPartnersInLearning #PPSDistrict #InnovativeAltSchools

As an elementary educator, I’ve found that best practices often feel more effective than research-based strategies because they are rooted in lived experience and the dynamic realities of the classroom. Best practices emerge from what has worked consistently across diverse groups of students, refined through trial, error, and reflection. They are adaptable, responsive to real-time needs, and often incorporate the human element of teaching—relationship-building, empathy, and intuition. In contrast, while research-based strategies are invaluable for providing a solid foundation, they can sometimes feel distant or rigid, developed in controlled settings that don’t always mirror the complexities of everyday classroom life. Best practices, however, are grounded in practicality, allowing teachers to blend evidence-based methods with the flexibility to meet students where they are. Ultimately, the fusion of research and best practices ensures a balanced approach, but it’s often the wisdom gained through hands-on experience that resonates most deeply with both students and teachers.
