Riding the waves of growth: Portugal, the door to the world For people like me, who grew up on the shores of the Italian Mediterranean Sea, studying Greek and Roman mythology while sailing and swimming in the warm waters of the Aegean islands, #Portugal seemed like the distant periphery of Europe. It's a country to spend your retirement years, shielded from the tax leviathans of mainland European countries, tasting great wine and enjoying a relaxed way of living. This week, I was forced to turn that thinking upside down during my visit to the Sidel Santa Maria da Feira plant. We often think that the hearts and lungs of our business are blowers and fillers, the big, super-sophisticated engineering marvels from sites in France and Italy. The rest is a necessary evil to complete the full lines. Nothing could be more wrong. The neural system of great #packaging lines lies in the smart design of the full line, enabled by conveyors, feeders, and all the electrical and #digital information that integrates the physical and data flow to deliver the high performance of a fully automated system. Our customers expect a full-service concept from design to installation and servicing for 30 years. They do not want only the turkey cooked in the oven at Thanksgiving. They are asking for the full dining experience: with entrees, desserts, quality silverware and shining glasses, heartwarming candle lights, and above all, the great company of the guests around the table. Well, this is what I experienced here this week. An outstanding greenfield plant, with lean design principles, proximity and transparency of layouts, and smart space configuration so that all functions can collaborate smoothly, quickly, and naturally around the same paperless tools, sharing ideas over a free coffee or in the canteen where workshop and engineering colleagues sit next to each other. The vibe is obviously Portuguese: welcoming, social, and open-minded. And it is enriched by the great #talent Sidel grooms from everywhere. So I met Tiago Santo, production scheduling engineer; Márcia Gomes, people manager and master PNL practitioner; Flávio Marques, plant director and master orchestrator; and Liliana Justo, parts administrator and welcome team lead. But I also met Juliette Stoecklin, a super expert in line design, coming from a four-year experience at our Cape Town site; Simone Mancarella, digital manufacturing manager, with recent experience in our French plants; Thomas de Galard, focused on building the capabilities of the growing organization (and learning to surf the ocean waves); and Andrew Young, head of continuous improvement. They share the same hunger for doing, learning, growing and owning it. Sidel Portugal is a bustling, globally connected node in the Sidel network. Its magnetic energy turns my Eurocentric beliefs upside down. We are at the opening gates of the Atlantic blue ocean, where the biggest waves in the world provide a metaphor for a land of opportunities.

Elviira's work sheds light on the often-overlooked role of system responsibles in driving sustainability efforts in industrial settings. Her research emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainability considerations into the daily tasks of system responsibles, ensuring that their decisions contribute to reducing the overall carbon footprint. The thesis also highlights key areas for improvement and provides actionable recommendations for embedding sustainability into the job descriptions and daily routines of system responsibles. In an era where environmental consciousness is more critical than ever, this thesis offers valuable insights and practical steps for organizations looking to enhance their sustainability efforts. It's a must-read for anyone involved in environmental management, system design, or corporate sustainability. I definitely did not expect this but happy to start working on this project. Thanks Koneen Säätiö | Kone Foundation! Also, it's my first project with Leiden University affiliation. We called our baby "Ratholes of environmental citizenship: a study of multicultural and multispecies waste management" and we will be looking at the entanglements of waste management, migrants and other vulnerable minority groups and rats. The whole project evolved from Moustapha's observation that sorting trash is difficult combined to observation during Helsinki Urban Rat Project that rat abundances and the areas of lower socioeconomic status are linked. Then we added the ideas of urban metabolism and waste citizenship to bring these into fruition. Thanks to Moustapha who really did the heavy lifting to get this together! The full translated summary: The significance of waste varies among both humans and other species. "One man's waste is another man's treasure" holds true for urban rats foraging for food waste, as they depend on human material flows. In this project, we examine how waste sorting and processing is organized in a multicultural and multispecies society and what they tell us about the significance of waste. On the one hand, waste is related to the actions of individual people, but on the other hand, there are also cultural practices, images and expectations associated with waste citizenship, community support, material challenges, and perceptions of our identity and our position as part of the environment. The research is divided into three phases: 1) the identity of Finnish environmental citizenship, 2) multi-species waste management and 3) expectations of waste citizenship and waste management of those in a vulnerable position. We examine the possibilities of transformative learning in shaping the citizenships of immigrants, so-called native Finns and rats. When collecting data, analyzing it and making recommendations, we approach the expectations and possibilities of waste citizenship, taking social, political, cultural, ecological and economic dimensions into account. Waste is an excellent focal point for research, because it binds people to their environment and to other species, sometimes in an unpleasant way. We combine natural sciences, social sciences and educational sciences when we study the practices and consequences of waste processing and environmental citizenship from a systemic perspective. We produce internationally new and impactful research on the interweaving of multispecies citizenship around the material and cultural expectations and practices of waste management. Our multifaceted approach enables a deep understanding of sustainability and inequality challenges and enables the recommendation of measures to support inclusive environmental citizenship and the circular economy. https://lnkd.in/dEu25BQ6
