🔴 Last week, in São Paulo, Brazil, during the important CONARH trade fair, part of a booth collapsed, causing injuries to several people. The situation was serious and concerning. I received a video and photos of the incident showing emergency responders attending to the victims. 💔 My first reaction was to think about the people affected by the collapse of the structure. Then, I considered the delicate situation for the company that contracted the booth, a major Brazilian banking and insurance institution. Finally, I thought about the booth builder, who will likely face license revocation and legal proceedings due to the civil liability involved. ⚠️ Furthermore, I believe that the indiscriminate sharing of the video and photos without regard for the victims is inappropriate and disrespectful. Situations like this require a more thoughtful and sensitive approach. ❗ After the incident, I saw criticisms of the Brazilian booth construction industry on this social media. These criticisms surprised and saddened me. Brazil is known for having top-tier booth construction companies. It is crucial to choose partners carefully. Of course, like in any country, there are less reliable companies and those that make mistakes, although incidents like this are rare. 🔍 We must be fair: every country has companies of varying quality levels. To generalize based on a single event does not do justice to a market as robust as Brazil's, which hosts trade fairs and constructs top-notch booths, generating millions of dollars annually. To ensure this quality and safety, there are associations like IFES - Sharing Knowledge and reputable companies like Diper_exhibitions. Life isn’t just about survival, (although it sometimes feels like that) it’s about the ability to thrive. Something many people have in common is the tendency to spend a great deal of psychological, emotional and physical energy worrying about things that are outside of their control. Understanding how our physiology is impacting on our physical and emotional reactions and then taking proactive steps to manage that using simple but effective pragmatic strategies grounded in neuroscience can be transformative. Everyone is welcome to visit Princes Quay Shopping Centre on the 10th April and show your support. 2. - Is it just for The Business Culture HEY members. Answer: NO. The expo is open to all business and people in Hull & East Yorkshire and The Humber. 3. Do I need to register and/or buy a ticket to attend. Answer: NO. You do not have to register - the event is FREE to attend. Just come along and support the exhibitors and meet new people. 4. Why should I attend - what's in it for me - is there a free lunch. Answer: WOW - I really did not get this question - What's in it for me! If that's all your thinking about, then its probably best you stay away. The expo is a great chance for us all to Connect, engage and support local businesses, its people and the City of Hull. Please spread the word - the more people know about it the more successful it will be. We have to, as designers, keep periodically asking this question - what can we do for society? Obviously the challenges that society faces, while designers face them too in their everyday, are not something designers are normally called upon to address. These strategic challenges are of a higher order of complexity and essentially of a different nature. Yet, it is clear to many that there is intrinsic in their nature, a call for approaches that design offers in other domains. Design cannot however take on the burden of addressing these challenge by themselves - that would be an inappropriate hubris on the part of design. The complexities demand inter- and trans disciplinary work, something traditional design is yet to come to grips with - but it could in principle lead these conceptual transformations effectively, if it made the necessary transitions in its own practices. It is also for society itself to recognize this strategic potential and transform design practices and associated ecosystems to serve its purpose.
