Just 15 months 😲 That’s the average tenure of a Data Scientist in Brisbane (according to LI Talent Insights) Is that long enough for businesses to get enough ROI? Perhaps, if there was low-hanging fruit, but probably not. While I don’t have the data on the ‘why’, from my lens based on conversations with the DS community: over-hyped promises about the environment and culture being better elsewhere to gain broader experiences, maybe over-zealous recruiters dangling attractive daily rates, and then reality setting in that the grass wasn’t greener! I find it fascinating looking at how people carve out their careers and reverse engineering the current Chief Data Officers formative roles and academic foundations to help guide career paths. While commercial experience is unbeatable, looking Academically: 🎓 The University of Queensland is leading the pack: with a third of current Data Scientists (all levels) being UQ Alumni, closely followed by 🎓 QUT (Queensland University of Technology) alumni with 27%, then 🎓 Griffith University alumni Just focusing on current C-level Data leaders , the spread of universities is much flatter – including more interstate (University of South Australia represent!) and international universities.

“I have so much data, but I don’t know what to include in my talk and what to cut out!” In an effort to be thorough, people just put everything into their presentations. The outcome? An overwhelmed audience that walks away confused. The solution? Shifting the focus to your audience. Ask yourself: Who are they? What do they really need to know? The point isn’t to showcase all your hard work — it’s to make sure people actually understand what you’re saying. Making your audience the center of your message is the only way to get clarity on what truly matters in your work. P.S. If you’re a scientist, engineer, data scientist or other STEM professional and want to learn how to explain your work in a way people actually get it — send me a DM to start working on it.

Attention Data Professionals! The The Wall Street Journal recently spotlighted a growing trend in the tech industry—high-paying jobs that don’t require a college degree. This includes roles in data analysis and software development, where the right skills can lead to six-figure salaries. We’re proud to share that Burtch Works was mentioned in the article for our insights into this evolving trend. Many companies are now deploying technical assessments in the interview process to validate what a candidate can do, often placing this above traditional qualifications like college degrees or work experience. This is great news for those passionate about data and tech, providing a clear path to a rewarding career based on merit and skills alone. Whether you’re looking to advance your career or pivot into a new field, there’s never been a better time to dive into the tech world! 🎓 LinkedIn Dark Humor 🎓 When the job application asks, "Did one or more of your parents or guardians complete a university degree course?" I am trying to understand how my parents' education impacts my data engineering skills: Mom: "I graduated from the School of Hard Knocks." Dad: "I have a PhD in Disappointment Management." 🔍 Hiring Manager: "But can they solve a SQL query?" 🤔 Me: "No, but I can. Just let me show my skills instead of my family tree!" Can we focus on my qualifications in a world where job applications are more invasive than a reality TV show? Dear Hiring Managers, make entry positions entry! The other day I saw a job post for an entry-level data scientist role. The requirement? Minimum 5 years of experience in LLM... Absolutely absurd. 5 years ago, when I was 2 years into my DS career, the wide use of LLM, as seen today, wasn't even a thing then. Knowing XGBoost, linear regression and K-means was enough to achieve a wide-array of tasks. If you want someone with 5 YoE in LLM, make the position senior! Or, lower the bar so that the requirement reflects the position level. Hire the right candidates, train them, and, even if they don't have 5 YoE in LLM, you'd be amazed what they will eventually bring to the table. 👉 Like this post? 🚀 The verdict is in! 🚀 📉 Employers have always valued portfolios over transcripts, and the value of portfolios is rising among employers. 💼 Employers are more likely to hire candidates who have completed a portfolio. 🎓 Employers with postgraduate education are much more likely to consider hiring folks who have completed a portfolio. ❗ There is no excuse to not have a portfolio if you're looking to advance your career in data science. Need help building your data science portfolio? Let me know! 💬 #DataScience #CareerGrowth #Portfolio #JobSearch #TechCareers #Employers #CareerAdvice

How to properly hire people with no data science experience... (And how to get hiring managers to take a chance on you.) Last year, I spent hours screening hundreds of applications and interviewing candidates. Here’s what I looked for when candidates didn’t have much experience: 📌 Did they complete any data science projects? Projects showed their skills. 📌 Are they passionate about data? I let them talk about their projects. Those who showed excitement stood out. 📌 Are they good communicators? They should explain concepts simply and clearly. 📌 Do they have strong problem-solving skills? I asked them to define problems and explain their approach. 📌 Are they open to learning and growing? I listened for times they learned new skills or tools to solve problems. Additional Considerations: 📌 Did they show initiative and work independently? 📌 How did they collaborate on teams and adapt to changing goals? ✨Remember everyone starts somewhere! P.S. What should employers consider when hiring aspiring data scientists with little experience? #DataSistah ♻️Reshare and help others!

Recruiter: You don't have experience Me: I'll gain some experience working for you Recruiter: No, you don't have experience Me: 👀 Recruiter: 👀 This was my first job search journey in a nutshell. I thought I was well-qualified for Data Science jobs after going through a couple of tutorials and copying projects like Titanic classification and House price prediction. Reality check: Hiring managers look for the impact you've created. How can you show impact from a Titanic classification project? It's not like I can go back in time and stop it from sinking. Is there even a solution to break this paradox? - There is now. Build real products, not just projects. I'm doing a 100% free cohort where I'll pair you up in groups to build real products. 👇 Register using the link in the first comment. 🔁 Reshare to help your Data community.
